Transition to Unleaded Avgas Encounters Further Delays and Challenges
The aviation industry’s ambition to transition general aviation to unleaded avgas by 2030 faces significant obstacles, as recent developments at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 have made clear. Despite regulatory mandates and ongoing efforts, the path toward a fully lead-free fuel supply remains uncertain and complex.
Regulatory Uncertainty and Leadership Changes
At Oshkosh, Chris Rocheleau, then deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), announced the release of the agency’s congressionally mandated final transition plan for unleaded avgas. However, he acknowledged that the plan is far from definitive, with many critical questions still unresolved. Rocheleau emphasized the necessity for continued collaboration between the FAA, industry stakeholders, and Congress to address the technical and regulatory complexities that persist. Shortly after his announcement, Rocheleau revealed his departure from the FAA to assume the role of chief operating officer at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), a transition that had been in progress prior to the event.
In response to these developments, the FAA reaffirmed that 2030 remains the official deadline for eliminating leaded avgas in the contiguous United States, while Alaska has been granted an extension until 2032 due to its unique logistical and climatic challenges. Meanwhile, the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions) coalition underscored that the 2030 target should be viewed as an aspirational goal rather than a guaranteed outcome, reflecting the ongoing uncertainty within the industry.
Technical and Market Challenges
A central hurdle in the transition is the absence of a single unleaded fuel compatible with the entire general aviation fleet. Rocheleau highlighted this gap, though some industry participants contest this view. General Aviation Modifications Inc. (GAMI) secured a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its G100UL fuel in 2022, and Swift Fuels has recently expanded its Approved Model List for its 100R unleaded fuel to cover over 800 engine models. However, high-performance engines remain excluded from approval, limiting the fuels’ universal applicability. Swift Fuels’ prior distribution of unleaded 100-rated fuel positions it advantageously to address supply and operational challenges more swiftly than competitors.
Complicating the landscape further, LyondellBasell and VP Racing are targeting late 2027 for the approval of their new 100E unleaded fuel. The certification and compliance process for aircraft currently incompatible with existing unleaded options is expected to be protracted and costly, potentially necessitating modifications to engine components such as pistons or cylinders. This fragmented market environment increases the risk of misfuelling incidents and complicates supply and distribution logistics.
At Oshkosh, it was also disclosed that GAMI’s G100UL fuel has entered the ASTM International specification process, marking a significant shift as GAMI had previously declined to participate. George Braly, GAMI’s Chief Engineer, asserted that the FAA-approved reports supporting G100UL’s certification should be sufficient for ASTM review, setting the stage for potentially contentious deliberations.
Industry Outlook
The FAA’s transition plan envisions a safe and phased elimination of leaded avgas, yet the general aviation sector continues to confront substantial technical, regulatory, and logistical challenges. As the 2030 deadline approaches, the community remains in a state of anticipation, awaiting clearer guidance and viable solutions to achieve a lead-free future.
