Aer Lingus Employee Triumphs in AI Challenge with Standby Hotel Concierge
An Aer Lingus digital product manager has secured first place in the 21-day RouteStack Build Challenge by developing an innovative AI-powered hotel concierge tailored for airline employees flying standby. Valentina Borovaya, participating in her first hackathon, created StandByStay to tackle a longstanding issue faced by airline staff: the difficulty of booking hotels in advance when flights are confirmed at the last minute.
StandByStay: AI-Driven Solution for Last-Minute Travel
StandByStay employs artificial intelligence to simultaneously search multiple potential destinations, reserving both a preferred and a backup hotel in each city. The system only proceeds with booking once the traveler confirms their flight, streamlining the process through RouteStack’s platform. Borovaya utilized Claude Code to build the solution, showcasing how AI can simplify complex and time-sensitive travel arrangements for airline personnel.
Other Notable Innovations in the Challenge
The second-place prize was awarded to HotelZippo, developed by travel technology entrepreneur Varun Jain. This tool condenses extensive family-friendly hotel research—often requiring 30 to 40 hours—into a single conversational interface. HotelZippo analyzes hundreds of reviews per property and highlights critical issues such as ongoing refurbishments with clear alerts. Bookings are executed via RouteStack’s hotel API, with webhooks monitoring each order from initiation to confirmation.
Third place went to MatchRoute, created by Stijn Risseeuw, a computer science and engineering student at TU Delft. MatchRoute transforms group trip planning from fragmented chats and spreadsheets into a centralized dashboard. An AI assistant facilitates coordination of budgets, dates, and destinations through interactive maps, calendars, and voting tools. Upon reaching consensus, the platform accesses live inventory from RouteStack to generate customized trip options.
RouteStack’s Role and Industry Implications
All three winning applications utilize RouteStack’s live inventory for flights, hotels, and rental cars, with integrated checkout and payout management. The entries were evaluated by a panel including industry expert Mike Coletta from Phocuswright, focusing on real-world applicability, originality, technical execution, and presentation quality.
Yogesh Kapadne, CTO of RouteStack, emphasized the achievement: “Three individuals, working independently, delivered travel products within three weeks that search live inventory and complete real bookings. The supplier contracts, payments, and compliance were already in place. They brought the ideas.”
The global challenge ran from June 8 to July 6, awarding the first-place winner a seven-night resort stay and $1,000 in RouteStack API credits. Second and third place winners received comparable resort stays and API credits, while all participants gained a year’s membership to a private travel club operated by Custom Travel Solutions, RouteStack’s parent company.

While Borovaya’s victory highlights Aer Lingus’s innovative capabilities, it also signals emerging challenges. As AI adoption accelerates within the airline and hospitality industries, Aer Lingus may encounter intensified competition from rivals deploying similar technologies. Integrating AI solutions like StandByStay into existing operational systems could present technical and logistical obstacles. Additionally, skepticism regarding AI’s effectiveness persists among both travelers and industry stakeholders. The broader trend toward AI-driven hotel sourcing and evolving corporate travel programs may influence Aer Lingus’s strategic direction as competitors escalate their own AI initiatives.
