Electra and Safran Helicopter Engines Formalize Turbogenerator Supply Agreement
Safran Helicopter Engines (SHE) has finalized a significant production contract to supply its TG600 turbogenerator for Electra’s EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft, marking a pivotal advancement in the field of advanced air mobility. This agreement, which follows a memorandum of understanding established in 2023, includes an initial order of 250 TG600 units and extends throughout the lifespan of the EL9 program.
Advancing Hybrid-Electric Propulsion for Ultra-Short Takeoff Aircraft
The EL9 is engineered to perform ultra-short takeoffs and landings, utilizing distributed electric propulsion combined with a blown-wing design. This configuration enables the aircraft to operate from runways as short as 45 meters (150 feet). Electra aims to introduce the EL9 into service by 2030, supported by a recent certification agreement with the US Federal Aviation Administration that designates its regulatory framework under Part 23 commuter aircraft standards. The aircraft’s maiden flight is projected for late 2027 or early 2028.
Central to the EL9’s propulsion system is the TG600 turbogenerator, which integrates a 1,300shp (970kW)-class Arrano turboshaft engine—also employed in the Airbus Helicopters H160—with two GENeUS generators developed by Safran Electrical & Power. This assembly produces a 600kW output to power eight Evolito electric motors mounted along the aircraft’s wing. In July, Safran Helicopter Engines successfully completed the first bench test of the TG600, a critical milestone preceding its integration into the EL9 prototype.
Strategic Collaboration and Industry Implications
Marc Allen, Chief Executive of Electra, described the agreement as a defining moment for both the company and the broader future of advanced air mobility. Cedric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines, emphasized that the contract represents a major milestone in the partnership with Electra and marks the official launch of Safran’s turbogenerator activities, complementing its established leadership in turboshaft technology.
Despite this progress, both companies face considerable challenges. The successful integration and certification of the TG600 within the EL9 platform will be essential, alongside managing the complexities of production and supply chain logistics for the initial 250-unit order. The hybrid-electric propulsion system’s technical intricacies and the stringent regulatory approval process present potential obstacles as the program advances toward its ambitious timeline.
The agreement has already generated heightened interest in hybrid-electric aircraft technologies and advanced air mobility solutions. Industry analysts anticipate that competing engine manufacturers will intensify efforts to develop and commercialize similar hybrid-electric propulsion systems, particularly as the EL9’s 2030 service entry approaches. The collaboration between Electra and Safran positions both firms at the forefront of this rapidly evolving sector, even as competition to bring next-generation propulsion technologies to market accelerates.
