ITA Airways Joins Star Alliance, Enhancing Global Connectivity Amid Integration Challenges
Star Alliance has officially welcomed ITA Airways as its newest member, marking a significant milestone in the Italian carrier’s international expansion. The induction ceremony took place at the Piazza di Spagna Lounge in Rome Fiumicino Airport’s Terminal 3, attended by key figures including ITA Airways CEO and General Manager Joerg Eberhart, Star Alliance CEO Theo Panagiotoulias, and Lufthansa Group Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx, alongside media and institutional representatives.
Integration into the Star Alliance Network
Effective from April 1, 2026, ITA Airways is fully integrated into Star Alliance’s extensive global network. This integration connects the airline’s primary hubs at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate airports—served collectively by 17 Star Alliance members—to over 1,150 destinations worldwide. Passengers will benefit from enhanced services such as through check-in, reciprocal frequent flyer recognition, and access to Star Alliance lounges, significantly improving the travel experience to and from Italy.
The Lufthansa Group has played a pivotal role in supporting ITA Airways’ entry into the alliance, deploying specialist teams to oversee an intensive integration program in recent months. Despite this support, ITA Airways faces the complex challenge of aligning its operations with Star Alliance standards. A key aspect of this process involves integrating its frequent flyer program with Lufthansa’s Miles & More, a task expected to present both operational and technical difficulties as the airline strives to provide a seamless customer experience.
Strategic Outlook and Industry Context
Looking forward, ITA Airways has announced plans to expand its long-haul network. CEO Joerg Eberhart revealed intentions to add six additional widebody aircraft by 2030, aiming to open new routes to the Americas. While the airline has achieved a full-year profit, it continues to contend with substantial financial burdens related to fleet leasing agreements. Addressing these costs remains a priority as ITA Airways seeks sustainable profitability.
The broader aviation sector remains highly competitive. As ITA Airways strengthens its international footprint through Star Alliance membership, other carriers such as Brazil’s Azul confront their own challenges, including structural barriers within an underdeveloped domestic market, though they also recognize significant growth opportunities.
As ITA Airways embarks on this new chapter within Star Alliance, it is positioned to offer Italian travelers enhanced connectivity and benefits, while simultaneously managing the operational and financial complexities inherent in alliance membership and ambitious expansion strategies.
