Key Themes at the Inter Airport Europe Focus Conference

Key Themes at the Inter Airport Europe Focus Conference
As Inter Airport Europe 2025 marks its 25th edition, the accompanying Focus Conference is poised to highlight the aviation sector’s most urgent and transformative issues. Taking place from 7 to 9 October at Munich Messe, Germany, the three-day event will feature 25 sessions that complement the innovations presented in the main exhibition hall. Central themes include artificial intelligence and automation, digitalisation, passenger experience, sustainability, and workforce strategies.
Syreeta Tranfield, Event Director at RX Global, the event’s organiser, emphasised the conference’s role in addressing the industry’s critical challenges and opportunities. “With an impressive line-up of aviation industry experts, together we will be tackling the industry’s major challenges and opportunities,” she stated, noting the focus on showcasing successful projects and tangible results.
Sustainability and Technological Innovation
A significant portion of the conference will be dedicated to sustainability, particularly how airports are advancing towards net-zero emissions. Panels featuring representatives from Bologna Airport, To70, and SACBO will explore these efforts in detail. Alongside sustainability, the technology and innovation track will examine the impact of AI optimisation, robotics, and digitalisation on airport operations. Discussions will cover a broad spectrum of airport functions, including baggage handling, passenger processing, ground services, and turnaround procedures, illustrating how technological advancements are reshaping the sector.
Competitive Dynamics and Workforce Challenges
The evolving competitive landscape among European airports will also be a key topic. Norwich Airport’s strategy to expand its European network amid competition from established regional hubs such as Manchester and Girona exemplifies the challenges faced by smaller airports. The recent introduction of Ryanair services at Norwich is expected to increase visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and leisure traffic, potentially prompting strategic responses from competitors through route adjustments and targeted marketing. Larger hubs like Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport are similarly under pressure to maintain their market position as travel patterns evolve and technology advances.
Risk management and contingency planning will be addressed with insights from Laila Odina, Chairperson of the Board at Riga Airport, who will discuss the implications of geopolitical developments on airport operations. The conference will also focus on workforce issues, including recruitment, retention, and the promotion of accessibility and inclusion for both passengers and staff.
Chloe Greenbank, editor of Regional Gateway, will moderate three panel sessions covering the future workforce, inclusion in aviation, and the use of AI to enhance passenger experience. These sessions are scheduled for 7 and 8 October and aim to provide a comprehensive update on the sector’s current state and future direction.
As European airports confront a rapidly evolving environment, the Inter Airport Europe Focus Conference seeks to serve as a vital forum for industry leaders to exchange strategies, confront challenges, and explore avenues for innovation and growth.
