NASA Launches Student Challenge to Address U.S. Aviation Infrastructure
NASA has unveiled the latest edition of its Gateways to Blue Skies competition, inviting college students across the United States to develop innovative aviation-based solutions for inspecting critical land infrastructure such as bridges and tunnels by 2035 or earlier. This initiative seeks to improve the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of maintaining the nation’s essential infrastructure, which is fundamental to the U.S. economy, global competitiveness, and everyday life.
Addressing Challenges in Infrastructure Inspection
As the country’s infrastructure continues to age and expand, traditional inspection methods face increasing difficulties. Many structures—including tunnels, bridges, highways, railways, and electric grids—are extensive and often located in hard-to-reach areas. Conventional inspection techniques can require disruptive shutdowns and expose workers to hazardous conditions. NASA envisions airborne platforms as a transformative approach to these challenges, offering the potential to reduce risks and enhance operational efficiency.
Steven Holz, competition lead at NASA’s Langley Research Center, emphasized the growing need for innovative solutions in this sector. He stated, “The demands for creative solutions like airborne platforms to improve the infrastructure sector are increasing exponentially. This competition gives talented students the opportunity to transform how we work with our critical infrastructure.”
Competition Structure and Participation
Sponsored by NASA’s University Innovation Project, the 2027 Gateways to Blue Skies competition encourages multidisciplinary teams of two to six college students to propose aviation-based inspection innovations. Each year, the competition highlights a new theme that addresses a complex national challenge, aiming to attract participants from diverse academic backgrounds and levels.
The competition is structured in two phases. In the first phase, teams submit a written proposal accompanied by a two-minute video, which are evaluated by panels of NASA and industry experts. The second phase invites up to eight finalist teams, each receiving $9,000, to present their refined concepts at a forum scheduled for May 2027. Winners will be offered internships with NASA Aeronautics during the subsequent academic year.
Students interested in participating are encouraged to review the guidelines and eligibility criteria available on the competition website. While submitting a non-binding Notice of Intent by October 12 is recommended to receive updates, final proposals and videos must be submitted by February 22, 2027.
Broader Implications and Administration
Despite the competition’s promise, several challenges remain. These include securing adequate funding and resources to support student innovations, ensuring alignment with NASA’s strategic objectives, and managing the competitive dynamics among collegiate teams. The initiative is also expected to attract significant interest from aerospace companies seeking collaboration with emerging talent. On an international level, agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA) may introduce similar programs to stimulate aerospace innovation within their regions.
The Gateways to Blue Skies Competition is managed by NASA’s Aeronautics Division within the Research and Technology Mission Directorate. The National Institute of Aerospace administers the challenge, while NASA’s Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation oversees the contract as part of its Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing Program.
