Bristow Introduces Airbus H160 Helicopters for Offshore Operations in Africa

Bristow Expands Offshore Fleet with Airbus H160 Helicopters in Africa
Airbus Helicopters has confirmed that Bristow Group will become a new operator of the Airbus H160, marking a significant expansion of the helicopter’s presence in the offshore energy sector. Bristow intends to incorporate up to five H160 helicopters into its fleet, all leased from Milestone Aviation Group, to enhance its offshore operations across the African continent.
Strategic Fleet Modernization for African Operations
Chris Bradshaw, President and CEO of Bristow Group, emphasized that the introduction of the H160 into their African operations will strengthen the company’s capacity to provide safe, reliable, and efficient services to clients in the energy industry. He highlighted that this move reflects Bristow’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a modern and capable fleet tailored to meet the evolving demands of its customers in the region.
Milestone Aviation’s CEO, Pat Sheedy, noted that the company is the first lessor to place H160 helicopters into Bristow’s fleet. Sheedy underscored Milestone’s strategic investment in new-technology medium and super-medium helicopters, which are designed to offer fuel efficiency and meet the operational requirements of mission-critical tasks worldwide. He also pointed to the robust partnerships Milestone maintains with both Bristow and Airbus, expressing optimism about future collaborative opportunities.
Market Dynamics and Operational Challenges
The deployment of the H160 in Africa coincides with rising corporate demand for this model, prompting Airbus to accelerate production to satisfy market needs. The H160 is distinguished by its advanced technology, operational efficiency, and enhanced safety features, attributes that align closely with the specific requirements of the offshore energy sector. This positions the aircraft as a next-generation solution for offshore transport missions.
Nonetheless, Bristow faces challenges in integrating the H160 into African operations, particularly in navigating regulatory compliance and ensuring operational readiness amid a landscape characterized by diverse aviation standards and infrastructure. Despite these complexities, the decision to introduce the H160 signals confidence in the helicopter’s capabilities and underscores the broader potential for modern rotorcraft in African offshore activities.
Competitive Landscape and Expanding Applications
The evolving market has also seen competitors respond with renewed interest in established models such as the H225 Super Puma, especially following Shell’s recent approval of the aircraft for oil and gas operations. This development indicates that while next-generation helicopters like the H160 are gaining momentum, legacy platforms continue to hold a significant role within the sector.
Beyond offshore transport, the versatility of the H160 is further demonstrated by its expanding applications. Metro Aviation recently obtained the first Emergency Medical Services Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the H160, showcasing the model’s adaptability to diverse mission profiles.
Through this latest agreement, Bristow, Milestone, and Airbus collectively reinforce the H160’s reputation as a flexible and technologically advanced solution for the energy sector, even as the market landscape continues to evolve and competitors adjust their strategies.
