This Carrier Just Became Southeast Asia's First Airbus A350-1000 Operator

Philippine Airlines Becomes Southeast Asia’s First Airbus A350-1000 Operator
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has marked a historic milestone as the first airline in Southeast Asia to operate the Airbus A350-1000. The carrier welcomed its inaugural aircraft into the fleet this week, initiating a significant phase of fleet modernization. PAL currently holds nine firm orders for the A350-1000, with an additional three options, all slated for delivery by the end of 2027.
Arrival and Significance of the First A350-1000
The first A350-1000, registered as RP-C3510, arrived in Manila following a direct flight of 14 hours and 20 minutes from Airbus’ Toulouse facility. The aircraft’s arrival was met with enthusiasm from senior PAL executives and aviation enthusiasts alike, highlighting the importance of this event for both the airline and the Philippines. Having completed its maiden flight less than three weeks prior, the aircraft is set to enter service early next year. This addition complements PAL’s existing fleet of two A350-900s, further enhancing its widebody capabilities.
With this delivery, PAL becomes the tenth global operator of the A350-1000, joining prominent carriers such as British Airways and Qatar Airways. PAL President Lucio Tan III described the acquisition as a “significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to fleet modernization and network growth,” underscoring its role as a source of national pride and a transformative development for the airline.
Features and Challenges of the A350-1000
The A350-1000 will serve as PAL’s new flagship aircraft, showcasing the airline’s latest cabin design and service offerings. It is configured to accommodate 382 passengers across three classes. The business class features 42 lie-flat seats with sliding privacy doors arranged in a 1-2-1 layout. Premium economy offers 24 seats in a 2-4-2 configuration designed for enhanced comfort, while economy class includes 316 seats in a 3-4-3 arrangement—a relatively uncommon seating layout shared by only a few operators such as Air Caraibes and French bee.
Despite the advanced efficiency and passenger comfort the A350-1000 provides, its introduction presents several challenges for PAL. The airline must manage substantial initial capital expenditures, increased maintenance and operational costs, and the need for extensive staff training on the aircraft’s sophisticated systems. Furthermore, PAL’s acquisition may intensify competition within the region, as other carriers with long-haul ambitions could respond by expanding their fleets or optimizing route networks.
Market Context and Future Outlook
The broader aviation market is demonstrating growing interest in the A350-1000, exemplified by China Airlines’ recent expanded order. This trend may influence regional market dynamics and pricing strategies as more airlines consider upgrading to the latest generation of widebody aircraft.
Since entering service, the Airbus A350-1000 has gained traction, although it remains behind the A350-900 in total sales and deliveries. Airbus has delivered over 100 units of the A350-1000 out of more than 360 sold, while the entire A350 family has secured nearly 1,500 orders worldwide.
As PAL integrates the A350-1000 into its operations, the airline positions itself at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s long-haul market, setting the stage for new opportunities and competitive challenges in the years ahead.
