Federal authorities are investigating an unusual incident involving a United Airlines passenger jet that struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport. The aircraft, United Airlines Flight 169, was arriving from Venice, Italy, on Sunday afternoon when the Boeing 767 made contact with the pole during its final approach. Despite the collision, the plane landed safely without injury to any passengers or crew members.
Impact and Response
The light pole struck by the aircraft also caused damage to a tractor-trailer traveling on the turnpike below. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital before being released. Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, confirmed the damage to both the pole and the delivery truck.
Following the incident, airport personnel conducted a thorough inspection of the runway to ensure it was free of debris, allowing normal operations to resume shortly thereafter. United Airlines reported that the aircraft sustained minor damage and that its maintenance team is currently assessing the extent of repairs required.
Investigations Underway
In response to the event, United Airlines has removed the flight crew from service and initiated an internal flight safety investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also opened an official inquiry, dispatching an investigator to Newark on Monday. The NTSB has requested the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the airline for detailed analysis. A preliminary report on the incident is expected within 30 days.
