Vertical Selects Cotswold Airport for Initial VX4 Factory but Halts Plans

Vertical Aerospace Selects Cotswold Airport for Initial VX4 Factory but Halts Full UK Commitment
Initial Manufacturing Plans and Strategic Developments
Vertical Aerospace has announced that it will assemble early models of its VX4 electric air taxi at Cotswold Airport in southwest England, where the company’s flight-test centre is already located. This new facility is expected to produce at least 25 aircraft annually, representing a key milestone in Vertical’s manufacturing strategy. In parallel, the company plans to establish a battery production plant at Avonmouth near Bristol, adjacent to its existing Energy Centre research and development site. This expansion is anticipated to triple Vertical’s battery production capacity, supporting the broader rollout of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology.
Despite these advances, Vertical has paused its full commitment to large-scale VX4 production in the UK. While the company had previously expressed strong ambitions for domestic manufacturing, it now states that it is still evaluating potential locations both within the UK and internationally for full-rate production of aircraft and batteries. A final decision on the production site is expected by 2026.
By co-locating its flight-test and initial production facilities at Cotswold Airport, Vertical aims to mitigate integration risks, enhance operational efficiency, and facilitate a seamless transition from prototype development to certification and early production. However, the decision to delay a comprehensive UK manufacturing commitment has generated uncertainty among stakeholders regarding the company’s long-term strategic direction. Industry analysts suggest that this ambiguity may invite skepticism and could influence competitive dynamics, as rival firms intensify efforts to secure regulatory approvals and expand their footprint in the rapidly evolving eVTOL market.
Certification, Funding, and Future Targets
In an effort to strengthen its position in the certification process and global market, Vertical recently appointed Patrick Ky, the former head of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), to accelerate VX4 certification and support international expansion. This strategic hire is widely viewed as a move to enhance the company’s credibility and competitive advantage as it navigates regulatory challenges and scales production.
Vertical aims to certify the VX4 by 2028 and estimates that achieving this goal will require an additional $700 million in funding. The company’s most recent investment round, completed in July, raised $60 million, which is expected to sustain operations through mid-2026.
Under its updated FlightPath 2030 strategy, Vertical has revised its long-term production and financial targets. The company now projects a total of 175 VX4 deliveries by 2030, an increase from the previous target of 150. It has also raised its anticipated annual production rate at the end of the decade from 200 to 225 units, with forecasts of reaching 900 aircraft annually by 2035, up from an earlier estimate of 700. Financially, Vertical expects to generate over $100 million in positive operating cash flow by 2030, surpassing its earlier breakeven projections.
As Vertical Aerospace advances with its initial UK manufacturing plans while maintaining flexibility for future expansion, its forthcoming decisions will be closely monitored by industry participants and competitors in the burgeoning eVTOL sector.
