Air France-KLM to Add 1,000 Workers to Maintenance Team

Air France-KLM to Expand Maintenance Workforce by 1,000 Employees
Air France-KLM Group, a prominent player in passenger transport, cargo services, and aircraft maintenance, is set to significantly increase its maintenance workforce. The Group’s maintenance arm, Air France-KLM Engineering & Maintenance, currently employs 13,500 specialists worldwide, with 7,200 based in France. This division services not only the Group’s own fleet but also more than 3,000 aircraft from over 200 client airlines globally. Operating through 20 maintenance centres and eight logistics hubs across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, it ranks among the leading global providers in the aviation maintenance sector.
Responding to Growing Demand and Modernization
As the aviation industry recovers from the pandemic, the demand for aircraft maintenance has surged, driving Air France-KLM to accelerate recruitment. Since 2022, the Group has hired nearly 500 permanent employees annually in France. Looking ahead, it plans to recruit over 1,000 additional staff by the end of 2027, with a significant number of these positions based at Paris-Orly. This site features a cutting-edge workshop inaugurated in 2023 following a €30 million investment, supported by the French State and the Île-de-France Region. The facility specializes in servicing the latest generation of aircraft engines, which deliver enhanced fuel efficiency and reduce noise emissions by up to 50 percent. This development highlights Air France-KLM’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and job creation in the southern Paris region.
The maintenance division also plays a vital role in workforce development, offering approximately 350 apprenticeship contracts and 300 internships annually. These programs provide young professionals with advanced technical training in areas such as airframe maintenance, engine servicing, electronic and mechanical equipment support, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, aero structures, and logistics. Such initiatives are crucial for maintaining expertise within one of the world’s busiest maintenance networks, especially as fleets modernize and aviation activity intensifies.
Challenges Amid Market Pressures and Competition
Despite these positive developments, Air France-KLM faces significant challenges. Increasing charges at Schiphol airport are exerting pressure on KLM’s operating model, while demand from key emerging markets, including India and Africa, remains subdued. These factors contributed to a 13 percent decline in Air France-KLM shares following the Group’s failure to meet operating profit expectations, raising investor concerns about its short-term prospects.
In addition, competitors are enhancing their maintenance capabilities. Korean Air, for instance, is expanding with a new maintenance hangar, while ongoing disruptions such as the Boeing defense workers’ strike threaten to affect global aircraft production, including military fighter jets. Within this competitive and evolving environment, Air France-KLM’s investment in talent and technology aims to strengthen its position as a global leader in aircraft maintenance, even as it contends with market headwinds and industry shifts.
