B-29 DOC Postpones Early 2026 Tour Stops for Engine Maintenance
Doc’s Friends Inc., the Wichita-based organization responsible for the B-29 DOC, has announced a revised schedule for the aircraft’s early 2026 History Restored Tour. Several planned stops originally scheduled for May and early June have been postponed due to extensive engine maintenance. The aircraft is currently undergoing significant work on two of its four engines as part of its winter maintenance and inspection program.
Maintenance Delays and Revised Tour Dates
Josh Wells, CEO of B-29 DOC, explained that since December, two engines have been under thorough maintenance and inspection to ensure the aircraft’s safety and reliability. One engine was reinstalled in late April, but the second remains under repair by the engine vendor and is not expected to be reinstalled until late May. This extended timeline has necessitated additional maintenance and testing before the aircraft can safely resume flight operations, prompting the rescheduling of the May and early June tour stops.
The updated itinerary now places the Cleveland, Ohio, stop from September 10 to 13, where the P-51 Gunfighter is also expected to participate. The Allentown, Pennsylvania, visit has been moved to September 17-20, followed by Wilmington, North Carolina, from September 24-27. The Knoxville, Tennessee, stop is now scheduled for October 29 through November 1.
Despite these postponements, several June stops remain on the calendar, including Rapid City, South Dakota (June 8-10), Moses Lake, Washington (June 11-15), Boise, Idaho (June 18-21), and Wendover, Utah (June 24-28). Additional tour dates for October and November are anticipated to be announced shortly.
Industry Context and Operational Challenges
The delay in the B-29 DOC’s tour schedule reflects broader challenges facing the aviation maintenance sector. Elevated fuel prices, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions have collectively impacted aircraft maintenance and delivery schedules across the industry. Major manufacturers such as Bombardier and Gulfstream have experienced delays in aircraft deliveries, highlighting the sector’s vulnerability to external pressures.
These operational difficulties are not confined to aviation alone. Similar disruptions have affected other industries, including entertainment, as exemplified by Post Malone’s decision to postpone early 2026 tour stops, including the El Paso event, due to engine maintenance concerns. Such developments underscore a wider trend of logistical and operational hurdles currently affecting multiple sectors.
Wells emphasized the importance of maintaining the B-29 DOC’s airworthiness, stating, “This is not a situation we were expecting, but preserving DOC’s legacy and ensuring it can continue flying for future generations is paramount. Engine maintenance of this scale requires time and precision, and our engine manufacturer is providing excellent service. We are proud of the dedication shown by our crew chiefs and maintenance teams as they complete the engine installations and finalize the annual winter inspection program.”
Over the weekend of May 9, the maintenance team successfully completed engine runs and checks on three of the four engines, while awaiting the return of the fourth. The organization remains committed to completing the necessary work to ensure the aircraft’s safe return to flight.
