Duncan Aviation Approved for Heavy Maintenance on Honeywell RE100 APU Series

Duncan Aviation Authorized for Heavy Maintenance on Honeywell RE100 APU Series
Duncan Aviation has secured Heavy Maintenance Authorization from Honeywell Aerospace for the RE100 Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) series, significantly broadening its maintenance capabilities at its Lincoln, Nebraska MRO facility. This approval enables the company to conduct heavy repairs and comprehensive in-house overhauls on the RE100LJ, RE100XL, and RE100CS models. These APUs are widely used on aircraft such as the Learjet 45, Learjet 75, Citation 560XL, Citation XLS, Citation Sovereign, and Citation Latitude.
Expanded Capabilities and Infrastructure Investment
The company’s maintenance team comprises 38 engine technicians who have undergone specialized training on the RE100 series. To support the expanded scope of work, Duncan Aviation is investing in new infrastructure and advanced tooling, including a Staley Co. modular test cell outfitted with sophisticated PLC monitoring technology. This climate-controlled and soundproof facility is designed to rigorously validate APU performance standards, ensuring high-quality maintenance outcomes.
Duncan Aviation plans to commence in-house RE100 APU overhauls in early 2027 at its Honeywell Aerospace Engine Overhaul Shop. The heavy maintenance operations will be overseen by Engine Program Manager Shawn Schmitz. The company anticipates several advantages from this development, including the consolidation of expertise within a unified team, elimination of the need to outsource units to external facilities, reduction in aircraft downtime, and a more streamlined maintenance process.
Brad Wales, Duncan Aviation Engine Manager, emphasized the benefits of the new authorization, stating, “Our customers already trust us with their aircraft and engines every day; this adds to that one-stop-shop experience for all things engine and APU. By bringing this heavy work in-house, we are providing our customers with the same quality and care they have come to expect from Duncan Aviation, while delivering a more seamless, end-to-end service experience.”
Challenges Amid Supply Chain Constraints
The expanded authorization arrives against the backdrop of ongoing supply chain challenges at Honeywell Aerospace, as reported by Aviation Week. These difficulties may lead to delays in parts availability, potentially affecting maintenance schedules and service continuity. While some operators may welcome Duncan Aviation’s enhanced service offerings, others could express concern over possible disruptions linked to supply chain constraints. In response, competitors might seek to bolster their own supply chain resilience or develop alternative solutions to mitigate these risks.
Duncan Aviation’s recent expansion of its engine shop, also noted by Aviation Week, positions the company to address growing maintenance demand. The ultimate success of the new heavy maintenance authorization will depend on Duncan Aviation’s ability to effectively navigate the evolving supply chain environment.
