FedEx Receives Sustainable Aviation Fuel at JFK Airport

FedEx Advances Sustainable Aviation Fuel Use at JFK and DFW Airports
FedEx has expanded its deployment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to include two additional major U.S. airports: Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This development marks a significant milestone in the company’s broader sustainability strategy. As of 2025, FedEx now utilizes blended SAF at five major U.S. airports, having secured agreements for the equivalent of five million gallons of neat SAF.
Karen Blanks Ellis, FedEx’s chief sustainability officer and vice president of Environmental Affairs, highlighted the progress made this year. She noted that the expansion to DFW and JFK concludes a successful period of SAF implementation across the country. While acknowledging ongoing challenges in procuring sufficient SAF and educating stakeholders on its role within aviation sustainability, Ellis expressed pride in the company’s advancements in 2025.
Partnership and Industry Collaboration
FedEx’s SAF supply at DFW and JFK is facilitated through a partnership with World Fuel Services (WFS), which will deliver a total of two million neat gallons of SAF as a minimum 30% blend. Deliveries to DFW commenced in December 2025, positioning FedEx as the first airline—cargo or passenger—to purchase SAF at the airport outside of a pilot program.
Bradley Hurwitz, senior vice president of Supply & Trading at World Fuel, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding SAF availability and meeting customer sustainability needs. He underscored how FedEx’s purchases at these airports demonstrate the effectiveness of WFS’s aviation fuel distribution platform in providing carriers with access to lower-carbon fuel options supported by a flexible and scalable supply chain.
Robert Horton, vice president of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability at DFW, stressed the importance of collaboration among airlines, airports, and fuel providers. He noted that FedEx’s SAF procurement exemplifies how existing airport infrastructure can support the advancement of sustainable aviation operations through cooperative efforts.
Challenges and Market Outlook
Despite increasing demand for SAF, the aviation industry continues to face significant obstacles. High costs and limited production capacity remain key barriers for FedEx and other carriers. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects a slowdown in global SAF production growth in 2026, raising concerns about the industry’s ability to meet both regulatory mandates and voluntary sustainability commitments.
Blanks Ellis cautioned that policies focusing solely on the demand side risk neglecting the necessary expansion of SAF supply. She called for comprehensive policy frameworks that encourage increased production to align with the growing demand and emissions reduction targets.
The broader market is responding to these pressures, with logistics companies intensifying their interest in SAF amid regulatory requirements and consumer demand for environmentally responsible alternatives. Competitors are accelerating investments in SAF infrastructure and forging new partnerships to secure a larger share of the expanding market. The global SAF market is projected to reach $50 billion by 2036, with North America expected to experience substantial growth as major airlines integrate SAF into their operations.
FedEx continues to advance a suite of sustainability initiatives, including aircraft modernization and fuel efficiency improvements. Having achieved a 30% reduction in aircraft emissions intensity from a 2005 baseline by fiscal year 2024, the company has set a new target of a 40% reduction by 2034, aiming ultimately for carbon-neutral global operations by 2040.
