France Advances Rafale F5 Development with Key System Contracts
France’s defense procurement agency, the Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), has taken a significant step toward the next generation of its Rafale fighter jet by awarding development contracts for five critical systems integral to the Rafale F5 variant. Announced on September 10, 2026, these contracts, granted over the summer to Dassault Aviation, Thales, Safran Aircraft Engines, and MBDA France, aim to mitigate technical risks ahead of the program’s full-scale development and production phase. While specific contract values and notification dates remain undisclosed, the initiative underscores France’s commitment to maintaining its combat aviation edge.
Development of Core Systems for Enhanced Capabilities
The contracts encompass the development of several advanced components essential to the Rafale F5’s performance. Dassault Aviation is tasked with integrating a very low drift inertial navigation unit based on a hemispherical resonator gyroscope, enhancing the aircraft’s navigational precision. Thales will develop the Inter-Vehicle Data Link (IVDL) and the RBE2-XG radar, both designed to improve situational awareness and target detection. The SPECTRA F5 self-protection suite, a collaborative effort between Thales and MBDA France, will transition to an all-digital electronic warfare core, significantly upgrading the aircraft’s defensive capabilities. Safran Aircraft Engines is responsible for the preliminary design phase of the M88 T-REX engine, a critical propulsion upgrade.
M88 T-REX Engine: A Leap in Thrust and Efficiency
Unveiled at the 2025 Paris Air Show, the M88 T-REX engine represents a substantial advancement over the current M88-2 powerplant. It aims to deliver a 20 percent increase in afterburning thrust, reaching nine metric tons compared to the existing 7.5 tons. This improvement is achieved through enhancements such as an upgraded low-pressure compressor, advanced high-pressure turbine materials, next-generation cooling circuits, and optimized nozzle aerodynamics, all within the same engine dimensions. The T-REX maintains the modular architecture of its predecessor, facilitating easier maintenance. Following the expiration of Franco-German propulsion funding and the collapse of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, Safran has confirmed its exclusive focus on this French initiative.
Advanced Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems
The RBE2-XG radar will retain the physical footprint of the current RBE2 AESA but will offer increased transmit power, extended detection range, and improved identification of low-observable targets. Enhanced processing capabilities will support artificial intelligence applications, enabling the sensors to operate collaboratively with minimal pilot input. The IVDL will provide a discreet, jamming-resistant, high-bandwidth data link, crucial for secure communications in contested environments. Together with the SPECTRA F5 suite’s transition to an all-digital electronic warfare core, these systems prepare the Rafale F5 to counter emerging threats anticipated through 2035 and beyond.
Strategic Implications and Future Outlook
The Rafale F5 program faces considerable technical challenges, including the integration of new technologies such as the ASN4G nuclear missile, advanced radar systems, stealth data links, and the ambitious engine upgrade. The absence of a foreign co-development partner and the termination of the Franco-German FCAS initiative have increased France’s reliance on the Rafale F5 to sustain its advanced combat-air capabilities independently.
Despite these hurdles, the enhancements planned for the F5 variant are expected to bolster its appeal in export markets, with India already expressing interest. This development is likely to prompt competitors, including Eurofighter and Gripen manufacturers, to accelerate their own modernization efforts to maintain competitiveness.
The DGA projects that the Rafale F5 will achieve qualification around 2033, followed by entry into service, ensuring that France remains at the forefront of combat aviation technology well into the coming decade.
