France Orders Eight Airbus U050 Capa-X Drones

France Advances Military Drone Capabilities with Airbus U050 Capa-X Order
France has taken a decisive step in modernizing its military drone capabilities by ordering eight Airbus U050 Capa-X uncrewed aircraft. Announced by Airbus on September 10, 2026, this procurement follows successful land and maritime trials and forms part of the Light Tactical Drone System (Système de drone tactique léger, SDTL) evaluation program. The acquisition underscores France’s commitment to enhancing the operational flexibility and technological edge of both its Army and Navy.
Details of the Procurement and Capabilities
The French Aeronautical Maintenance Directorate (Direction de la maintenance aéronautique, DMAé) has contracted for four drone systems, each comprising two U050 units. Two systems are designated for the French Navy and two for the French Army, with deliveries slated for 2027. Airbus has not disclosed the financial terms of the contract. This order builds upon an initial acquisition of a Capa-X system in late 2025, which underwent rigorous testing across multiple branches of the French armed forces.
During these evaluations, the U050 demonstrated a seven-hour endurance while carrying dual payloads and operating at ranges up to 100 kilometers. Airbus advertises a maximum endurance exceeding 10 hours, contingent on payload and configuration. The drone’s design features a maximum takeoff weight of 120 kilograms and a payload capacity of up to 20 kilograms. Its long-wing configuration, with a six-meter wingspan, supports both conventional and vertical takeoff and landing modes, allowing deployment without the need for a runway. The system’s portability is notable, requiring only two pickup trucks for transport.
Initially, the drones will be equipped with electro-optical sensors to provide imagery intelligence (IMINT) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) capabilities. Airbus has indicated that the platform is adaptable, with the potential to integrate additional sensors and mission equipment as operational requirements evolve. The U050 is intended to support a broad spectrum of missions, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), target tracking, communications relay, electronic warfare, and battlefield support.
Development and Strategic Context
The U050 Capa-X was developed by Survey Copter, a French tactical drone manufacturer acquired by Airbus. In October 2025, Survey Copter was integrated into Airbus Helicopters as part of a strategic consolidation of Airbus’s uncrewed aircraft activities. The French Ministry of the Armed Forces first showcased the Capa-X at Eurosatory in June 2026, at which time it was described as not yet operationally deployed. Airbus now regards this latest order as marking the drone’s transition into its “operational phase.”
The platform is also being developed under the European Defence Agency’s Multi Mission Unmanned Aircraft System (M2UAS) project, which aims to expand its capabilities to include electronic warfare and airborne effects. While this order is expected to strengthen Airbus’s position in the tactical drone market in the near term, the integration of the U050 into existing French military systems may present challenges related to logistical support and supply chain management. The long-term impact of the U050 will depend on its operational performance and reliability. Meanwhile, industry competitors are likely to accelerate the development of comparable or more advanced drone technologies, potentially intensifying competition and driving innovation within the tactical drone sector.
