IAI and Merlin Collaborate to Advance AI-Driven Autonomy for Cargo Aircraft
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US-based aerospace and defense technology firm Merlin, aiming to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered autonomous systems for commercial freighter operations. This partnership seeks to advance the integration, certification, and deployment of AI-driven autonomy in cargo aircraft, marking a significant step toward transforming the future of air freight.
Scope and Objectives of the Partnership
The MoU outlines a collaborative framework for joint market exploration, engineering development, regulatory preparation, and initial platform selection. These coordinated efforts are designed to culminate in a definitive commercial agreement and establish a clear pathway toward civil certification of autonomous cargo aircraft. The collaboration is a central component of Merlin’s recently launched autonomous flight initiative, Condor, which targets large, multi-crew aircraft including freighters. The launch of Condor in May also included a similar agreement with World Star Aviation, reflecting a growing industry momentum toward certifiable autonomous capabilities within the cargo sector.
Boaz Levy, chairman of the board at IAI, underscored the company’s enduring commitment to aerospace innovation. He stated, “Our collaboration with Merlin reflects a shared commitment to advancing next-generation capabilities that can enhance safety, efficiency, and operational flexibility across the aviation industry. Matt George, CEO and founder of Merlin, emphasized IAI’s pivotal role in the global cargo aviation ecosystem. He highlighted IAI’s expertise in aircraft certification, advanced avionics, and freighter conversions as critical assets for the Condor program. George remarked, “Collaborations with IAI and World Star reflect growing industry recognition that AI-powered autonomy can enhance safety, improve operational efficiency, and help operators scale existing fleets to meet increasing demand. Together, we’re laying the groundwork to bring certifiable autonomy to the aircraft that power global cargo networks.”

Despite the promising outlook, the widespread adoption of AI-driven autonomy in cargo aviation faces significant challenges. Integrating AI recommendations into daily operations, ensuring reliable autonomous performance under adverse conditions, and overcoming industry skepticism regarding AI transparency and control remain formidable obstacles.
