IndiGo Orders 60 Airbus A350-900 Jets to Double Widebody Fleet

IndiGo Commits to 60 Airbus A350-900 Jets, Doubling Its Widebody Fleet
IndiGo has announced a significant expansion of its widebody aircraft fleet with a firm order for 60 Airbus A350-900 jets, doubling its previous commitment of 30 aircraft. This move marks a pivotal moment in the airline’s growth strategy, aimed at enhancing its long-haul capabilities and expanding its international network. By securing this substantial fleet addition, IndiGo is positioning itself to better serve the evolving needs of both domestic and international travelers.
The announcement was made by IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, at the 2025 International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting held in Delhi. The airline formalized the order through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus, reinforcing the partnership between the two companies and underscoring their shared vision for future growth.
Strengthening India’s Aviation Market Leadership
IndiGo currently holds nearly 65% of India’s domestic air travel market, making it the country’s largest airline by a considerable margin. The expansion of its widebody fleet aligns with India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest aviation market, a milestone highlighted by the country hosting the IATA Annual General Meeting this year.
The addition of the Airbus A350-900 aircraft will enable IndiGo to introduce and sustain new long-haul routes, connecting India’s rapidly growing population to key global destinations with increased frequency and improved convenience. This strategic fleet enhancement is designed not only to increase capacity but also to elevate passenger experience and operational efficiency.
The Airbus A350-900 is renowned for its advanced aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, which are among the most efficient and reliable turbofan engines in service, the aircraft will provide IndiGo with the range, flexibility, and performance necessary to meet the demands of a dynamic market.
A Strategic Partnership with Airbus
The MoU signed at the IATA meeting formalizes IndiGo’s expanded aircraft order and strengthens its collaboration with Airbus. This partnership is expected to facilitate closer cooperation in fleet planning and delivery scheduling, laying a robust foundation for IndiGo’s strategic ambitions within the global aviation sector.
