KCI Aviation Plans $16 Million Aircraft Hangar and Support Facility

KCI Aviation Announces $16 Million Aircraft Hangar and Support Facility in West Virginia
KCI Aviation (KCI) has revealed plans to develop a $16 million aircraft and engine maintenance facility at North Central Regional Airport (KCKB) in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The new hangar complex will be situated adjacent to the recently completed CKB passenger terminal, benefiting from direct tarmac access to the airport’s 7,800-foot runway. This development is secured through a long-term land lease agreement with the airport authority.
Facility Specifications and Construction Timeline
The initial phase of the project will include a 30,000-square-foot maintenance hangar designed to accommodate two large-cabin aircraft simultaneously for both engine and airframe servicing. Construction is slated to commence in August 2025, with completion anticipated by the first quarter of 2026. KCI operates as a Title 14, Part 145 FAA Certificated Repair Station and holds approvals from European and UK aviation authorities, alongside ISO 9001:2015 and AS9110C certifications, underscoring its commitment to quality and regulatory compliance.
Strategic Partnerships and Operational Capabilities
This expansion will establish KCI as the base for its Pratt & Whitney Preferred Service Provider contract, designating the company as one of Pratt & Whitney’s global Centers of Excellence. Through this partnership, KCI is authorized to provide specialized engine maintenance for Gulfstream Aerospace aircraft powered by PW800 series turbofan engines. Notably, KCI and Pratt & Whitney are the only entities exclusively authorized by Gulfstream to deliver these services.
The facility will support on-aircraft engine operations, including removal and installation. Removed engines will be transported to the adjacent Pratt & Whitney plant for overhaul, while KCI will install rental engines to minimize aircraft downtime. This approach aims to optimize service time for Pratt & Whitney customers and reduce shipping costs throughout the aviation supply chain.
Future Expansion and Industry Context
A second phase of construction will add 50,000 square feet of workspace, significantly expanding KCI’s capacity for ongoing engine maintenance. This expansion will support collaborations with Pratt & Whitney Engine Services, Leaseco Division, Component Solutions, Boeing’s Aviall group, and other partners. The facility will also accommodate post-rental inspections, fly-in maintenance work, and mobile repair team operations.
While the project is expected to enhance KCI’s role in servicing Gulfstream’s global fleet and improve maintenance options at KCKB, it faces challenges from rising construction costs and potential delays. The competitive business aviation sector is evolving rapidly, with recent developments such as Flexjet’s substantial equity raise and KlasJet’s expansion into Asian charter markets highlighting the dynamic environment. These trends may prompt increased interest from private jet operators and strategic responses from competitors seeking to expand their infrastructure.
Economic Impact on the Local Community
An independent feasibility study projects that KCI’s investment will generate an economic impact exceeding $350 million for the local community. This growth is expected to be driven by job creation, increased travel activity, and heightened demand for local goods and services. The expansion will create between 25 and 30 new positions for aircraft mechanics and support staff between 2025 and 2026, contributing to the region’s economic development.
