Major Lessor Orders 15 Additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners

AerCap Expands Boeing 787 Dreamliner Fleet with New Order
AerCap, the world’s largest aircraft leasing company, has announced an order for 15 additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, further expanding its extensive portfolio of these widebody aircraft. The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 during a joint press conference featuring AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope. This latest acquisition brings AerCap’s total Dreamliner fleet to nearly 140 aircraft, underscoring the lessor’s strong commitment to the model.
A key element of the agreement is AerCap’s substitution rights, which allow the company to convert any or all of the new 787-9 orders into the larger 787-10 variant should market demand shift. This flexibility enables AerCap to better align its offerings with the evolving capacity requirements of its global airline customers, adapting to diverse route networks and operational needs.
Kelly highlighted the enduring appeal of the 787, noting its “strong operating economics and exceptional performance across a wide range of route networks.” The expansion of AerCap’s Dreamliner fleet reflects confidence in the future of air travel and the ongoing recovery and growth of the aviation industry.
Boeing’s Dreamliner Sees Strong Demand at Farnborough
AerCap’s order is part of a broader surge in Boeing 787 commitments announced during the Farnborough Airshow. AerCap became the fourth customer in just two days to place a Dreamliner order. The event was initiated by Riyadh Air, which firmed up 28 Dreamliner orders, including a conversion of 20 units from the 787-9 to the 787-10. Philippine Airlines followed with its first direct Boeing purchase since 2007, ordering up to 20 Boeing 787-10s—15 firm and five options—as part of a major fleet renewal and expansion expected to begin deliveries in 2031. Uganda Airlines also entered the market with its inaugural order for both the 787 and the 737 MAX, placing orders for four units of each model.
These substantial orders signal renewed confidence in the long-term prospects of the aviation sector and highlight the sustained demand for efficient, next-generation widebody aircraft. For Boeing, the wave of 787 orders at Farnborough reaffirms the Dreamliner family’s strong market position among airlines and lessors alike.
The agreement also carries broader economic significance. Edward Walsh, U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, emphasized that the deal “underscores the strength of the economic relationship” between the United States and Ireland. He described it as “a vote of confidence in U.S. aerospace innovation and supports high-quality jobs,” highlighting the transatlantic ties reinforced by such major commercial transactions.
With this expanded order and the ability to adapt to shifting market demands, AerCap is strategically positioned to meet the evolving needs of airlines worldwide, while Boeing continues to consolidate its leadership in the widebody aircraft market.
