Vasily Shapkin, Deputy General Director of the National Research Center "N.E. Zhukovsky Institute," explained that the assessment concentrates on evaluating the effects of various factors on engine parameters, including damageability. These procedures are rigorously regulated and play a crucial role in maintaining aviation safety standards.
Rigorous Testing and Manufacturing Improvements
Among the most notable recent tests was a bird strike assessment, in which a chicken carcass was propelled directly at the PD-8 engine fan. The engine successfully withstood this demanding test, addressing one of the critical safety challenges faced by modern aviation. This achievement underscores the robustness of the engine design under extreme conditions.
In parallel, the Ufa-based UEC-UMPO plant resolved a longstanding production issue involving hidden defects and internal pores in titanium and aluminum castings. This was accomplished through the application of hot isostatic pressing, a process that subjects components to high pressure and temperature. The technique has significantly enhanced the strength and service life of parts used in both the PD-14 and PD-8 engines, contributing to overall engine durability.
