Phu Quoc International Airport is on the verge of completing its second runway, a critical development as Vietnam’s largest island prepares to host the APEC 2027 Summit. The new runway, extending 3,300 meters in length and 45 meters in width, runs parallel to the existing strip and is engineered to accommodate modern wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and Boeing 777. Calibration flights are scheduled for July 27-28, signaling the final phase before the runway becomes fully operational.
The construction timeline of approximately eight months represents an unprecedented achievement in Vietnam’s aviation sector. Aviation expert Trinh Nhu Long highlighted the project’s pace as exceptional, especially when compared to similar mainland airport developments such as Long Thanh and Van Don, which typically require two to three years to complete. The accelerated progress is particularly remarkable given the logistical complexities and environmental constraints associated with building infrastructure on an island.
Technical Precision and Advanced Systems
The project’s execution involved six months dedicated to foundational work, structural development, and concrete pavement, followed by two months focused on the installation, connection, inspection, and calibration of critical equipment. Engineers conducted meticulous measurements to determine precise coordinates, elevations, and installation points, ensuring the runway meets the stringent accuracy standards necessary for safe aircraft operations. Even minor deviations could compromise pilots’ ability to interpret signals during approach or taxiing.
A standout feature of the new runway is its state-of-the-art CAT II lighting system, which employs LED technology with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 hours. This system supports operations under low-visibility conditions, enhancing safety and reliability. Nearly 1,500 airfield lights and close to 400 signs have been installed, complemented by precision navigation and landing systems. Each component was carefully positioned at exact coordinates and elevations, fully integrated with the airport’s power and control infrastructure. Nighttime tests of the lighting system at full intensity have successfully created a 3,300-meter guidance axis for incoming flights.
Strategic Importance Ahead of APEC 2027
The completion of this runway arrives at a pivotal moment for Phu Quoc, which is preparing for a significant influx of international visitors during the APEC Summit. Authorities are prioritizing compliance with international standards for wide-body aircraft operations while managing increased tourist traffic and addressing safety concerns, particularly in the wake of a recent boat capsize incident near the island.
Industry analysts suggest that the swift and successful completion of the runway will likely attract greater interest from international airlines, underscoring Vietnam’s expanding capabilities in aviation infrastructure. This development may prompt regional competitors to accelerate upgrades to their own airport facilities in order to maintain competitiveness in attracting airlines and travelers.
