Port San Antonio Plans to Become an Air Taxi Hub

Port San Antonio Advances Ambitions to Become a Premier Air Taxi Hub
Port San Antonio is accelerating its efforts to establish itself as a leading hub for air taxi services through a strategic partnership with SkyGrid LLC, a Boeing subsidiary headquartered in Austin. This collaboration centers on the development of the region’s first vertiport designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, often described as “flying cars.” The initiative aims to position the area at the forefront of advanced air mobility, with the potential to transform passenger and cargo transport across Texas within the next decade.
Developing Infrastructure and Airspace Management
Jim Perschbach, president and CEO of Port San Antonio, emphasized the critical importance of understanding and mapping airspace to ensure the safe operation of autonomous aircraft. He highlighted that the success of this emerging mode of transportation hinges on robust safety protocols and infrastructure. SkyGrid, recognized by Perschbach as a global leader in airspace management, will be instrumental in creating the necessary systems to manage the anticipated influx of eVTOL traffic.
The port has committed $33.9 million toward site enhancements near its headquarters, funded through a combination of its own resources and grants from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. Concurrently, a comprehensive study is underway to chart potential air taxi routes over San Antonio, laying the groundwork for efficient and safe aerial corridors.
SkyGrid’s role extends beyond infrastructure to the development of sophisticated software and hardware solutions that generate a high-fidelity digital representation of the operating environment. Jia Xu, CEO of SkyGrid, explained that pilotless aircraft operations demand exceptionally reliable data and sensor integration to maintain safety. The system will consolidate inputs from sensors, radar installations, and aircraft transponders to deliver a comprehensive, real-time view of the airspace.
The planned vertiport will be strategically linked to Kelly Field, which hosts a diverse mix of civil, commercial, and military aviation activities. This unique environment offers an ideal testing ground for the technology. Xu noted that demonstrating operational success in such a complex setting would validate the system’s applicability in other regions. The data collected will enable SkyGrid’s platform to implement localized traffic control with increased automation, enhancing safety and efficiency.
Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Despite the promising outlook, Port San Antonio faces significant technological and regulatory challenges. Addressing gaps in airspace signal interpretation and weather condition monitoring will be essential to scaling operations for both crewed and uncrewed aircraft. The three-year memorandum of understanding between Port San Antonio and SkyGrid represents a pioneering agreement for both parties, focused on identifying and overcoming these obstacles.
The competitive environment for air taxi hubs is intensifying, with cities like Los Angeles actively positioning themselves ahead of major events such as the 2028 Olympics. Industry rivalries are becoming more pronounced, exemplified by legal disputes like Archer Aviation’s attempt to dismiss Joby Aviation’s trade-secret lawsuit. Meanwhile, the successful deployment of Waymo’s autonomous robotaxis at San Francisco International Airport signals growing public acceptance and infrastructure readiness for autonomous transport services, trends that may influence the trajectory of air taxi development.
As Port San Antonio advances its vision, its ability to navigate the evolving technological, regulatory, and competitive landscape will be crucial to its emergence as a key player in the future of urban air mobility.
