Riyadh Air Chooses CFM LEAP Engines for New A321neo Fleet

Riyadh Air Selects CFM LEAP Engines for New Airbus A321neo Fleet
Riyadh Air has confirmed a firm order for 120 CFM International LEAP-1A engines to power its forthcoming fleet of 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft, marking a pivotal development in the Saudi carrier’s ambitious expansion strategy. The contract, which includes spare engines, was signed at the Dubai Airshow by Adam Boukadida, CFO of Riyadh Air, and Stéphane Cueille, CEO of Safran Aircraft Engines, in the presence of senior executives from both organizations.
Strategic Partnership and Technological Advancements
Launched in 2023 as part of Saudi Arabia’s broader economic diversification efforts, Riyadh Air aims to establish itself as a significant international airline. The choice of CFM’s LEAP-1A engines, renowned for their fuel efficiency and equipped with the latest high-pressure turbine durability kit optimized for hot climates, reflects the airline’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. Adam Boukadida emphasized the importance of this partnership, highlighting the LEAP engines’ superior fuel economy, reduced noise and emissions, and enhanced durability as key assets for Riyadh Air’s operations.
CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, has delivered over 4,000 LEAP engines to date, achieving the fastest production ramp-up in commercial aviation history. The LEAP-1A engine incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as composite fan blades and ceramic matrix composites, offering a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions compared to the previous-generation CFM56 engines. These engines are supported by advanced health monitoring systems and an open maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) ecosystem, which together ensure high reliability and optimal asset utilization for airlines.
Market Implications and Future Prospects
As Riyadh Air prepares to integrate its new A321neo fleet, the airline faces the dual challenge of ensuring timely delivery of both aircraft and engines while seamlessly incorporating new technology into its operations. Industry observers are closely monitoring how Riyadh Air’s fleet expansion and engine selection will influence its competitive positioning against established regional carriers. In response to this evolving landscape, competitors such as Etihad Airways have announced their own fleet investments, including commitments for 25 Airbus widebody twinjets and initial orders for the A330neo.
Analysts suggest that Riyadh Air’s decision to equip its fleet with LEAP-1A engines could significantly enhance operational efficiency and cost management, potentially setting new standards for sustainability and performance in the Middle East. Owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Riyadh Air plans to connect passengers to over 100 destinations worldwide by 2030, offering a digitally-led, full-service experience with advanced in-flight entertainment and connectivity.
Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International, expressed pride in supporting Riyadh Air’s fleet introduction, noting the contribution to building one of the most fuel-efficient fleets in the region and fostering a dynamic aerospace ecosystem in Saudi Arabia. As Riyadh Air advances, the industry will be watching closely to assess how the airline navigates fleet integration challenges and market competition, and how its strategic decisions influence the future of air travel in the Middle East.
