Videray Unveils Handheld X-Ray Device for MRO at Farnborough
Procurement decisions for non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment often go unnoticed, yet they play a crucial role in shaping the cost structure of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. Every hour an aircraft remains grounded for inspection translates directly into lost revenue. For over four decades, Aberdeen-based Inspectahire has focused on minimizing this downtime, and its presence at this year’s Farnborough Airshow underscores its latest advancements in streamlining aircraft inspections.
Introducing the Videray PX Range
At the heart of Inspectahire’s exhibit is the Videray PX range, developed in collaboration with Videray to tackle the high operational costs associated with traditional radiographic inspection. Conventional film-based methods typically require darkroom processing and partial disassembly of aircraft, resulting in significant labor and downtime expenses.
The PX range features two handheld devices designed to meet diverse inspection requirements. The PX1 is a single-sided, 140keV handheld backscatter imager intended for on-aircraft use. It delivers high-definition digital images within seconds through its Infinity Detector and is equipped with a 7-inch, 700-nit touchscreen. Additional functionalities include a 4K camera, line lasers, a dedicated focus mode, and image-stitching capabilities for inspecting larger areas.
The PXT, marketed as the first handheld transmission X-ray unit, operates in conjunction with the wireless MTP+ detector panel to produce full through-thickness radiographs of components up to 30mm of steel. This makes it particularly suitable for removed parts, castings, welded assemblies, and other dense structures accessible from both sides.
These devices are designed to support a range of critical inspections, including the detection of sub-surface corrosion and water ingress, internal evaluation of turbine and engine components, assessment of composite assemblies for disbond and delamination, and identification of foreign object debris within enclosed structures.
Operational Benefits and Market Challenges
Cailean Forrester, Managing Director at Inspectahire, highlighted the operational advantages of the new technology: “X-ray inspection used to mean film, darkrooms, and taking aircraft apart. With the Videray PX range you get real-time digital images in seconds, from a device you can carry to the flightline. For maintenance teams, that means defects found sooner, less disassembly, and aircraft back in service faster.”
Despite the promise of these handheld X-ray devices, Videray faces significant challenges in gaining market acceptance. The sector is dominated by established MRO technology providers, and the company must demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of its innovations to secure a foothold. Additionally, ongoing supply chain disruptions may affect product availability and delivery timelines. Industry responses are expected to be mixed; while some operators may embrace the new technology, others may remain cautious, preferring to rely on proven solutions. Competitors are likely to counter by emphasizing their own advanced diagnostic tools or reinforcing their established reputations and customer trust.
Alongside the Videray PX range, Inspectahire is also showcasing its broader aviation NDT portfolio, which includes remote visual inspection borescopes and videoscopes, ultrasonic testing systems, and pulsed eddy current equipment.
Founded in 1981, Inspectahire has grown to become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of remote visual inspection and NDT services. The company combines equipment sales and rentals with in-house research and development and a dedicated technician workforce, reflecting the evolving demands of the aviation maintenance sector where innovation and reliability remain paramount.
