Air Peace CEO Onyema Attributes MRO Failure to South-East Region

Air Peace CEO Onyema Attributes MRO Facility Relocation to Challenges in South-East Nigeria
Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema has dismissed allegations of neglecting Nigeria’s South-East region, attributing the relocation of his airline’s multi-billion-naira Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility to persistent local challenges. Originally planned for Enugu or Anambra, the facility is now being developed in Lagos due to unresolved disputes and security concerns in the South-East.
Land Disputes and Local Opposition
Onyema revealed that Air Peace initially intended to establish the MRO project in Enugu, securing state government approval and committing significant investment. He recounted multiple official visits and meetings with the governor and cabinet, during which he sought land allocation for what he envisioned as Africa’s largest MRO facility upon completion. Despite the governor’s support, the project was hindered by “intrigues and selfish interests from unknown others,” leading to protracted delays.
The chairman detailed how conflicts over land ownership emerged, with various families asserting claims over parcels earmarked for the project. These disputes effectively stalled progress, rendering Onyema’s efforts fruitless despite repeated trips to Enugu. A similar scenario unfolded in Anambra, where Onyema stated he had paid over N100 million for land near the airport, only to encounter resistance from local communities contesting the state’s authority to allocate the property.
Calls for Regional Self-Reflection Amid Security Concerns
Onyema urged the Igbo community to engage in self-reflection, emphasizing that internal divisions and conflicts are significant obstacles to development. “The time has come for Igbos to look in the mirror and see who their true enemies are. When they gaze into the mirror, the real enemy will be staring back at them,” he asserted. He also lamented the deteriorating security situation in the South-East, noting that he has not visited his hometown in over three years. This instability compelled him to abandon plans for an international hospital and hotel resort in the region.
Strategic Shift to Lagos and Industry Implications
The MRO facility, critical for ensuring aircraft safety and operational efficiency, is now under development in Lagos through a partnership with Embraer. This relocation reflects the significant hurdles Air Peace encountered in establishing a world-class MRO center in the South-East, including inadequate infrastructure and stiff competition from established African carriers. Industry analysts remain cautious about the new center’s ability to meet broader continental demands, while competitors may capitalize on their existing MRO capabilities to maintain market dominance.
Onyema’s remarks underscore the broader challenges facing investment in the South-East, where land disputes and security issues continue to deter major projects. He called on regional stakeholders to address these internal problems rather than attributing blame externally. As Air Peace advances its Lagos-based MRO initiative, the airline’s future success will hinge on navigating logistical and operational challenges and convincing the market of its capacity to compete with entrenched players across Africa.
