BDO Ireland Establishes Aviation Advisory Unit

BDO Ireland Establishes Aviation Advisory Unit Amid Industry Challenges
BDO Ireland has announced the creation of a dedicated Aviation Advisory unit aimed at expanding its service offerings to the global aviation finance and aircraft leasing sectors. The new practice is led by partner and head of Aviation Advisory Stan Barnes, supported by Donal Boylan and Gerry Power. Collectively, the team brings over a century of senior executive experience spanning aviation finance, aircraft leasing, asset management, and aviation technology.
Ireland’s Central Role in Aircraft Leasing
Ireland continues to serve as a pivotal global hub for aircraft leasing, hosting nine of the world’s ten largest aviation lessors. According to BDO, Irish-based lessors manage more than half of the world’s leased commercial aircraft fleet. Despite this dominant position, the sector faces increasing complexity as companies navigate evolving regulatory frameworks, shifting capital markets, rapid technological advancements, and intensified scrutiny over risk management, asset performance, and long-term value preservation.
Scope and Strategic Focus of the New Unit
BDO’s Aviation Advisory unit will provide comprehensive guidance to lessors, airlines, investors, financial institutions, and other aviation-related businesses. Its services will encompass support for complex aircraft and portfolio transactions, operational transformation, asset lifecycle management, risk and governance, technology transformation, and regulatory compliance. The establishment of this unit coincides with a period of significant industry challenges, including rising fuel costs and the pressing need for sustainable growth strategies. These factors are driving aviation companies to seek integrated advisory solutions that address both immediate financial risks and the preservation of long-term value.
Navigating Challenges and Competitive Landscape
The firm acknowledges that the new unit must adeptly manage the sector’s intricate regulatory environment and inherent financial risks associated with aviation projects. BDO also faces competition from established players such as Lockton, which already maintain a strong presence in aviation insurance and advisory services. Industry observers anticipate that clients will closely evaluate the new unit’s expertise, while competitors may respond by enhancing their own offerings or targeting similar market segments.
BDO intends for its Aviation Advisory practice to leverage specialist sector knowledge alongside the broader capabilities of its Irish operations. The unit’s primary objective is to assist aviation companies in managing risk, improving decision-making processes, and safeguarding the long-term value of aircraft assets and businesses amid ongoing regulatory, financial, and technological transformations within the industry.
