Calls for Malaysia to Increase Local Aircraft Component Maintenance
Strengthening Domestic Aerospace Capabilities
SHAH ALAM, Sept 11 — Malaysia is urged to enhance its local aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities to reduce dependence on foreign facilities for aircraft component servicing. Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah, chief executive officer of the National Aerospace Industry Corporation (NAICO), emphasized that bolstering domestic MRO services would not only shorten turnaround times and lower costs but also improve the country’s competitiveness. This development could create new opportunities for both local and foreign small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating within Malaysia’s aerospace sector.
Shamsul pointed out that a significant portion of engine components currently undergo repair overseas. He stressed the need to attract more local companies to establish themselves in this field to support major MRO organisations. “Most of our engine components are being shipped out of Malaysia for servicing or repair. What we need to do is to attract more local companies to establish themselves in these areas to support MRO organisations, especially the major players,” he stated in a recent interview with Media Selangor.
Challenges and Emerging Opportunities
Despite the clear benefits, Malaysia faces considerable challenges in localising aircraft component maintenance. The sector requires substantial investment in infrastructure and advanced technology, and local providers may initially encounter higher operational costs compared to established international competitors. Furthermore, the growth of the industry hinges on developing a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern aerospace maintenance.
Nonetheless, market interest in expanding local capabilities is increasing. Companies such as GTA Holdings Bhd have announced plans to establish Centres of Excellence aimed at enhancing aviation maintenance expertise. At the same time, international firms may need to adjust their strategies to maintain market share as Malaysia pursues greater self-reliance in defence and aerospace maintenance. Government support for local enterprises is expected to be a crucial factor in facilitating this transition.
Shamsul acknowledged that while Malaysia may not be able to perform every type of repair domestically, the goal should be to localise as many activities as possible, whether through homegrown companies or foreign SMEs operating within the country. “Not everything can be done in Malaysia. So, we need to localise as many activities as possible,” he remarked.
Future Directions and Workforce Development
Malaysia has attracted several global aerospace companies and MRO expansion projects in recent years, yet the existing ecosystem requires further strengthening to support the sector’s next phase of growth. This includes attracting higher-quality investments and encouraging both local and foreign SMEs to complement established firms.
Looking ahead, Shamsul highlighted the importance of adopting advanced technologies such as composite repair, 3D printing, advanced machining, automation, and robotics. These innovations are expected to enable Malaysia to undertake more complex component repairs domestically and elevate its MRO capabilities beyond traditional manual processes.
NAICO projects that the expansion of MRO and aerospace manufacturing will generate strong demand for skilled talent, with approximately 18,000 additional workers needed over the next five years. Shamsul stressed that future employees must possess advanced technical and digital skills, including programming, process redesign, and expertise in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and analytical tools.
He concluded that the transition towards a higher-skilled workforce and greater integration of technology will be essential for Malaysia to enhance productivity, reduce turnaround times, maintain quality standards, and remain competitive in the global aerospace industry.
