Emirates SkyCargo and LODD Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Emirates SkyCargo and LODD Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Advance Autonomous Air Cargo Solutions
Emirates SkyCargo has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi-based LODD Autonomous to jointly explore the development and deployment of next-generation air cargo technologies. The agreement, signed by Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, and Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, represents a significant milestone in integrating advanced autonomous systems into global logistics networks.
Collaboration on Autonomous VTOL Aircraft
The partnership will focus on validating the use of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft within Emirates SkyCargo’s extensive global operations. This collaboration includes conducting feasibility studies, engaging with regulatory authorities, and executing live demonstrations. Drawing on over four decades of experience in global freight movement, Emirates SkyCargo will actively participate in LODD’s experimental operations through 2027. This involvement aims to provide critical operational insights that will guide the design and development of autonomous cargo solutions, with the ultimate goal of commercial deployment in both regional and international markets.
Central to this initiative is LODD’s Hili aircraft, an unmanned, hybrid heavy-lift cargo VTOL developed and manufactured in Abu Dhabi. The Hili is fully autonomous from take-off to landing, capable of carrying payloads up to 250 kilograms over distances reaching 700 kilometers. Following the successful completion of its first test flight, Emirates SkyCargo is evaluating the integration of the Hili into its ground fleet to enhance operations across its dual airport hub. This move aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to invest in future-ready technologies that enable seamless and efficient goods movement.
Regulatory and Market Considerations
Despite the promising technological advancements, the path to commercial deployment faces regulatory challenges. Securing approval for autonomous, hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft such as the Hili remains a complex process. The MoU emphasizes a joint commitment to engage with regulatory bodies to ensure safety and compliance, reflecting the UAE’s strategic vision to leverage innovation for societal advancement.
The announcement has generated increased interest in advanced air mobility solutions within the industry. Observers suggest that competitors may accelerate their own autonomous cargo aircraft initiatives in response to this partnership. Nevertheless, Emirates SkyCargo’s existing strategic alliances, including its collaboration with Air Canada, remain intact, underscoring the airline’s adaptability and dedication to expanding its global footprint.
Leadership Perspectives and Strategic Outlook
Badr Abbas highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “This partnership with LODD is a reflection of our commitment to introduce innovative products that solve our customers’ transportation challenges. Emerging technologies will form the foundation of the next era of logistics, and Emirates SkyCargo will be at the forefront of this movement, investing our experience and expertise into the development of innovations that drive tangible impact.”
Rashid Mattar Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, emphasized the synergy between the two organizations, noting, “Our collaboration with Emirates SkyCargo blends LODD Autonomous’s frontier technologies with the country’s enduring commitment to safe, scalable, and sustainable logistics. Together, we will accelerate the adoption of drone-powered solutions that expand reach, cut delivery times, and strengthen the UAE’s position as a global logistics hub.”
Emirates SkyCargo operates a network spanning over 150 destinations with a fleet exceeding 260 widebody aircraft, consistently setting new standards in global logistics. Earlier this year, the airline launched Emirates Courier Express, a door-to-door delivery service that integrates its cargo expertise with its passenger network. Meanwhile, LODD, supported by the Advanced Technology Research Council, continues to lead innovation in civilian logistics through unmanned aerial vehicles and AI-enabled software, aiming to simplify operations, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability.
