Etihad Close to Ordering 10 Additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Etihad Nears Agreement to Acquire 10 Additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners
Etihad Airways is reportedly on the verge of finalizing an order for 10 more Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body aircraft, with an official announcement expected at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom later this month, according to industry insiders. This prospective acquisition would further expand the Abu Dhabi-based carrier’s long-haul fleet and reinforce its ongoing fleet renewal strategy, initially unveiled in late 2025.
Fleet Expansion and Strategic Positioning
While negotiations remain ongoing and no formal agreement has been confirmed, the potential order aligns with comments made by Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves last month. Neves indicated that the airline was considering a double-digit order for wide-body jets, though he did not specify the manufacturer or model. Both Etihad Airways and Boeing have declined to comment on the discussions.
If completed, the new Boeing 787 order would complement Etihad’s substantial fleet expansion announced in November 2025. At that time, the airline committed to acquiring 32 Airbus wide-body aircraft, including 15 A330-900neo jets, additional A350-1000s, and A350F freighters, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. The carrier also ordered 30 Airbus A321LR aircraft to bolster its regional and medium-haul network from its Abu Dhabi hub. Furthermore, Etihad placed an order for 28 Boeing wide-body jets in late 2025, reflecting a balanced approach to fleet development across both major manufacturers.
As of July 2026, Etihad operates a fleet of 46 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which serve as the backbone of its long-haul operations. This fleet comprises 37 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, of which 36 are active and one is parked, alongside 10 active Boeing 787-10 aircraft. These Dreamliners are heavily utilized from Abu Dhabi, with over 1,400 monthly departures to key destinations including Milan, Chicago, Frankfurt, and Beijing.
Industry Challenges and Market Dynamics
The potential order comes amid ongoing technical challenges facing the Boeing 787. Recently, United Airlines grounded several Dreamliners due to issues with the aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), raising concerns about reliability that could influence future operators. Concurrently, competition within the wide-body aircraft market is intensifying. American Airlines is reportedly evaluating a wide-body order from either Boeing or Airbus to remain competitive with rivals Delta and United. Airbus has highlighted that demand for new aircraft is driven by the need to serve longer, thinner routes and to replace aging fleets, creating a highly competitive environment for both manufacturers.
Etihad is also navigating a complex regional context. The airline is restoring services following a temporary reduction in March, which was prompted by the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran, leading to elevated fuel prices and regional disruptions. With a fragile ceasefire now in place, Middle Eastern airlines are gradually recovering, and Airbus reports that Gulf aviation hubs are returning to normal traffic levels.
Should the order be confirmed at Farnborough, it would underscore Etihad’s commitment to long-term growth and investment in fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft to meet rising demand for long-haul travel, while managing both technical and market challenges.
