Expert: Canadian Airlines Managing Fuel Costs, but Ticket Prices May Rise by Summer

Canadian Airlines Navigate Rising Fuel Costs Amid Potential Ticket Price Increases
Canadian airlines are currently managing the challenges posed by escalating fuel prices, but passengers may face higher ticket costs as early as this summer, according to aviation industry experts. The surge in fuel prices is largely attributed to supply chain disruptions in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, factors that are beginning to exert pressure on the Canadian aviation sector.
Fuel Hedging Provides Temporary Relief
John Gradek, a lecturer specializing in aviation and supply chain management, explained that major Canadian carriers such as Air Canada have fuel hedging contracts in place that will shield them from the worst of the price increases at least through early June. These contracts lock in fuel prices, allowing airlines to avoid immediate exposure to volatile spot market rates. However, once these hedging agreements expire, airlines will face significantly higher fuel costs, which could severely impact their financial performance.
While Canada is not experiencing fuel shortages, the rising prices alone are enough to strain airline operations. Smaller carriers like WestJet and Porter may not have the same level of hedging protection, though the Canadian aviation industry as a whole is currently equipped to manage the situation for the short term.
Impact on Ticket Prices and Flight Operations
The financial pressures from increased fuel costs are already being passed on to consumers. Both WestJet and Air Canada have introduced substantial fuel surcharges, with WestJet adding fees up to $60 and Air Canada imposing a $50 surcharge on flights to popular warm-weather destinations. Additionally, Air Canada has suspended flights to New York’s JFK Airport for a five-month period, citing the high cost of jet fuel as a primary reason.
Despite strong travel demand, the industry faces the risk of profit erosion if fuel prices remain elevated. Gradek warns that marginal routes—those with lower profitability—may be discontinued by mid-summer as airlines reassess their networks. Air Canada has responded by increasing fares and reducing capacity in an effort to maintain financial stability amid these challenges.
“The issue is not about shortages, but about price,” Gradek noted. “Once hedging contracts run out, carriers will have to make tough decisions about which routes to keep and which to cut.”
As the summer travel season approaches, passengers should anticipate potential disruptions, including higher ticket prices and reduced flight options, as Canadian airlines adjust to ongoing volatility in fuel costs.
