FIA 2026: Rolls-Royce lands PAL A350-1000 Trent XWB-97 engine order and care deal

Philippine Airlines Expands Long-Haul Fleet with Rolls-Royce Engine Order
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has formalized a significant agreement with Rolls-Royce, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of 18 Trent XWB-97 engines. These engines will power nine additional Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, marking a key step in the airline’s ongoing long-haul fleet expansion. The deal, announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, also includes provisions for engines to support up to five more A350-1000s under PAL’s purchase rights.
Comprehensive Maintenance Support Through TotalCare
In conjunction with the engine order, PAL has opted for Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare service package. This program offers advanced health monitoring and maintenance support, designed to enhance the operational reliability and availability of the airline’s growing fleet. The integration of TotalCare aligns with PAL’s broader fleet modernization strategy, which emphasizes operating a modern, fuel-efficient, and dependable long-haul fleet.
The Trent XWB-97 engine, exclusively powering the Airbus A350-1000, is engineered to deliver superior fuel efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance. Lucio C. Tan III, president and chief operating officer of PAL Holdings, Inc., highlighted the strategic importance of the investment, stating that the combination of the Airbus A350-1000 and Trent XWB-97 engines will continue to define the airline’s flagship long-haul operations for years to come. He further emphasized that the TotalCare agreement provides comprehensive maintenance support, which is crucial for maximizing fleet availability and ensuring predictable long-term maintenance costs.
Rob Watson, president of civil aerospace at Rolls-Royce, underscored the benefits of the partnership, noting that the TotalCare service, combined with the new engine order, will enable Philippine Airlines to optimize operational performance as it expands its A350-1000 fleet.
