GE Aerospace Advances AI Innovation and Talent Development in India
Strengthening Bengaluru as a Global Innovation Hub
GE Aerospace is significantly expanding its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and talent development in India, with its Bengaluru-based John F Welch Technology Centre (JFWTC) emerging as a critical global hub for innovation in aircraft engine technology. Established 25 years ago, the centre stands as one of GE’s largest integrated research and development facilities outside the United States. It plays a vital role in advancing key areas such as fuel efficiency, sustainable aviation, and predictive engine maintenance.
Alok Nanda, Chief Technology Officer of GE Aerospace in India, emphasized the transformative impact of AI across the company’s operations. He described AI as a “game changer” that enhances the efficiency of engine design processes and improves the predictability of maintenance schedules. The Bengaluru team has been instrumental in securing over 1,000 aviation technology patents and has contributed significantly to the design, development, and certification of major engines including the CFM LEAP, GEnx, and GE9X. These engines power a wide range of commercial aircraft, both wide-body and narrow-body, underscoring the integral role of Indian expertise in GE’s global success.
AI Integration Across Design and Maintenance
AI technologies are being integrated throughout GE Aerospace’s operations. On the maintenance side, the company employs Analytics-Based Maintenance (ABM), which combines AI with physics-based models to forecast engine servicing needs by analyzing operational data and environmental factors. The Aerospace Services Technology Lab (ASTL) at the Bengaluru centre is pioneering AI-driven methods to revolutionize engine inspection and maintenance workflows.
In the upstream design phase, AI accelerates the optimization of engine performance by enabling engineers to explore a wider array of design possibilities aimed at enhancing efficiency and sustainability. The Bengaluru team is actively involved in the Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) programme, a collaborative effort between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines under CFM International. This initiative targets a fuel efficiency improvement exceeding 20 percent. Additionally, engineers are contributing to the development of hybrid electric propulsion systems and the testing of alternative fuels, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable aviation technologies.
Navigating Industry Challenges and Workforce Development
GE Aerospace’s intensified focus on AI innovation in India coincides with broader challenges facing the aerospace sector. As India advances ambitious objectives in aerospace, defense, and semiconductor industries, the demand for a digitally skilled, future-ready workforce is growing. The competitive environment is intensifying globally, with rivals also investing heavily in AI and talent cultivation to secure market leadership.
Within India’s workforce, there is considerable optimism among knowledge workers and mid-career professionals regarding AI’s potential to facilitate upskilling and career advancement. However, younger employees express concerns about job displacement due to automation. In response, GE Aerospace is investing in customized training programs designed to enhance workforce adaptability and competitiveness.
Alok Nanda reaffirmed the company’s commitment to nurturing local talent, stating, “In terms of talent, there is no better place than India.” This dedication is reflected in the fact that over 1,000 GE and CFM engines currently power aircraft operated by Indian carriers, highlighting India’s growing importance in the global aviation ecosystem.
