IATA Publishes 2025 World Air Transport Statistics Report
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its 2025 World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) report, providing an extensive analysis of the global airline industry's performance over the past year. This annual publication aggregates data from 1,315 airlines worldwide, including detailed contributions from more than 250 international carriers. The report covers a broad spectrum of metrics such as demand, supply, operational performance, fleet size, leading routes, employment figures, and financial outcomes.
Growth in Premium-Class Travel
The 2025 report highlights a notable increase in international premium-class travel, which includes business and first-class segments. Passenger numbers in this category reached 109.7 million, marking a 4.5% rise compared to the previous year and accounting for 5.5% of all international travelers. Latin America experienced the most significant growth, with premium-class passengers surging by 22.1% to 4.0 million. Europe maintained its position as the largest market for premium travel, hosting 39.7 million passengers. Meanwhile, North America and the Middle East recorded the highest proportions of premium travelers relative to their total passenger volumes, at 10.4% and 9.5% respectively.
Asia Pacific Leads in Busiest Routes
The Asia Pacific region continued to dominate the world’s busiest airport pairs in 2025. The route between Jeju International Airport and Seoul Gimpo International Airport (CJU-GMP) remained the most heavily trafficked, with 13.3 million passengers. Among the top ten busiest airport pairs globally, all were domestic routes except for Jeddah–Riyadh (JED-RUH) in the Middle East.
Regionally, Cape Town–Johannesburg (CPT-JNB) was Africa’s busiest route, carrying 3.4 million passengers. In Latin America, Bogotá–Medellín (BOG-MDE) led with 3.5 million travelers. Europe’s busiest pair was Barcelona–Palma de Mallorca (BCN-PMI) with 2.1 million passengers, while Stockholm Arlanda–Malmö (ARN-MMX) experienced the fastest growth, increasing by 85% to 271,031 passengers. In North America, New York JFK–Los Angeles (JFK-LAX) was the busiest domestic route with 2.2 million passengers, and JFK–London Heathrow (JFK-LHR) topped international routes at 2.1 million.
Leading Passenger Markets
The United States remained the largest passenger market globally in 2025, handling 890.1 million passengers, a modest increase of 1.6% from 2024. China followed with 776.1 million passengers, reflecting a 4.8% growth. Other significant markets included the United Kingdom with 269.7 million passengers (up 3.4%), Spain with 252.7 million (up 5.0%), and Japan with 223.5 million (up 9.2%). These figures encompass both domestic and international travel, with international journeys counted in the statistics of both origin and destination countries.
Industry Outlook Amid Geopolitical and Economic Challenges
Despite the robust performance recorded in 2025, the airline industry faces considerable challenges heading into 2026. IATA reported a 2.2% year-on-year decline in global airline traffic in May 2026, largely attributable to a nearly 30% drop in Middle East traffic amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Although jet fuel prices have decreased significantly, airlines in the Asia-Pacific region, which posted healthy profits in 2025, are now confronting rising operational costs and potential threats to profitability.
The financial repercussions of the Iran conflict have prompted IATA to revise downward its forecast for net profits in 2026. The incoming IATA leadership will be tasked with steering the industry through these complex geopolitical and economic uncertainties, balancing efforts to sustain recovery with the need to manage emerging risks.
