The Highest Paid US Airline Pilots Ranks & Their Average 2026 Salaries
Senior Captains Lead in Compensation
In the United States, the highest-paid airline pilots are senior Captains, particularly those operating widebody aircraft for the major legacy carriers: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines. These Captains can earn salaries exceeding $400,000 in the later stages of their careers, complemented by numerous benefits such as guaranteed minimum hours of pay and substantial retention bonuses. The strong bargaining power of commercial pilots today is largely a result of union influence combined with a persistent pilot shortage. This shortage has prompted airlines to actively recruit trained pilots from the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, which in turn has created a ripple effect, leading to a shortage of military pilots. To address this, the military has introduced retention bonuses to encourage pilots to extend their service. Since 2019, some airlines, including Frontier Airlines, have also begun targeting helicopter pilots, offering incentives to transition into commercial airline flying.
Pilot Ranks and Responsibilities
Modern commercial aircraft operate with just two pilots on the flight deck: the First Officer and the Captain. The elimination of the Flight Engineer role has simplified the crew structure, but both pilots are fully qualified and type-rated, capable of independently flying and operating the aircraft. Contrary to common misconception, the First Officer is not a trainee but a fully licensed pilot who has completed the same core airline training as the Captain. The primary distinction lies in the Captain’s role as pilot in command, bearing final legal authority over the flight. Captains are responsible for operational decisions, aircraft acceptance before departure, regulatory compliance, and crew management. The higher pay for Captains reflects their greater experience and responsibility, with salaries typically 40 to 55 percent higher than those of First Officers flying the same aircraft for the same airline. This pay gap narrows when comparing widebody First Officers to Captains of smaller regional or narrowbody aircraft, though such comparisons are not directly equivalent.
Impact of Aircraft Type on Earnings
The type of aircraft flown is a significant factor influencing pilot salaries, though this is more closely tied to the experience level required to operate larger aircraft rather than the aircraft itself. The Big Three airlines contract regional carriers such as Envoy Air, SkyWest, PSA Airlines, CommuteAir, and GoJet to operate their United Express, Delta Connection, and American Eagle flights. While pilots employed by these regional carriers are not directly employed by the legacy airlines, they operate under their branding and are often included in salary comparisons. First Officers flying regional jets like the CRJ series or Embraer ERJ-170/175 typically earn between $110,000 and $160,000 annually. Captains on these regional aircraft earn correspondingly higher salaries, though still below those of widebody Captains at the major airlines.
