Willis Sustainable Fuels Selects Wilton International for Aviation Fuel Project

Willis Sustainable Fuels Selects Wilton International for Aviation Fuel Project
Willis Lease Finance Corporation (NASDAQ: WLFC), a prominent lessor of commercial aircraft engines and provider of global aviation services, has announced that its subsidiary, Willis Sustainable Fuels (UK) Limited (WSF), will establish a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility at Wilton International in Teesside. The site, owned and operated by Sembcorp Utilities (UK) Limited, is slated to host a plant with an annual production capacity of 14,000 tonnes of SAF, expected to commence operations in 2028. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.
Strategic Location and Partnerships
Dr. Amy Ruddock, Senior Vice President of Strategy, Sustainability, and Transformation at Willis Lease Finance Corporation, emphasized the significance of Wilton International’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure for next-generation SAF production. She highlighted that the choice of Teesside reflects the region’s growing importance in the UK’s energy transition. By leveraging the site’s capabilities and collaborating with technology and construction partners, Willis Sustainable Fuels seeks to advance the UK’s leadership in sustainable aviation while fostering a resilient local supply chain.
The project recently secured a £2.9 million grant from the UK Department for Transport’s Advanced Fuels Fund, supporting development activities from July 2025 through March 2026. The facility will convert sustainable biomethane, derived from waste sources, into aviation fuel. Key technology partners include Johnson Matthey and Axens, with engineering led by McDermott. The development is expected to generate approximately 50 permanent skilled jobs and up to 200 positions during the construction phase.
Mike Patrick, CEO of Sembcorp Energy UK, welcomed the announcement, underscoring Wilton International’s role in accelerating the UK’s net-zero ambitions. He noted that the site offers essential infrastructure, reliable energy, and integrated utility services critical for delivering large-scale, low-carbon projects. This collaboration reinforces Sembcorp’s commitment to supporting industrial decarbonization and enhancing Wilton International’s strategic position in the energy transition.
Industry Context and Challenges
Despite the project’s promising outlook, the deployment of SAF technology faces considerable challenges. A recent study by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) identifies technological advancements as the primary obstacle to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions in aviation by 2050, rather than feedstock availability. This has intensified scrutiny of SAF production capabilities and timelines, with industry observers closely monitoring developments such as the WSF project.
The competitive landscape is also evolving rapidly, as major aerospace manufacturers including Boeing and Airbus increase investments in sustainable aviation fuels and expand their production and distribution networks. Conversely, Shell’s recent decision to cease operations at its Dutch biofuels plant in favor of more profitable ventures may influence SAF supply dynamics and industry trends.
Willis Lease Finance Corporation continues to broaden its aviation solutions portfolio, encompassing engine leasing, maintenance, and end-of-life services. Through Willis Sustainable Fuels, the company aims to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of aviation and support the UK’s broader energy transition efforts.
