MAHB Highlights MRO Sector's Role in Sustaining Aviation Growth
Expansion of Selangor Aero Park and Industry Developments
KUALA LUMPUR — The maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector is increasingly critical to sustaining global aviation growth amid mounting operational and maintenance pressures faced by airlines in a rapidly evolving industry. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is at the forefront of this development, with its 180-hectare Selangor Aero Park within KLIA Aeropolis attracting significant international aerospace players. GE Aerospace, serving as the anchor tenant, is expanding its presence at the site, underscoring the park’s growing importance as a regional aerospace hub.
Bryan Thompson, MAHB’s chief airports officer, highlighted the ongoing expansion plans for GE Aerospace, which include the construction of engine test cells and new MRO facilities. The first phase of this infrastructure development is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027, signaling a robust commitment to enhancing Malaysia’s aerospace capabilities.
Challenges Facing the MRO Sector
Despite these positive developments, the MRO sector confronts several challenges that could impede its growth trajectory. Elevated fuel prices, largely driven by geopolitical conflicts and instability in regions such as the Middle East, are exerting additional pressure on airlines. These rising costs may compel carriers to reduce capacity, potentially weakening demand for maintenance services and slowing the post-pandemic recovery of aviation maintenance. Airlines are already adjusting operations in response to fuel price shocks, while ongoing supply chain disruptions continue to pose significant risks to the sector’s expansion.
Strategic Responses and Malaysia’s Aerospace Ecosystem
In response to these headwinds, industry players are adopting strategic measures to sustain growth and competitiveness. Malaysia Aviation Group, among others, is actively expanding its MRO capabilities to navigate the challenging environment. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani emphasized the increasing significance of Malaysia’s aerospace ecosystem, driven by rising aviation demand across the Asia-Pacific region.
“MAHB is committed to supporting this growth by strengthening the ecosystem surrounding our airports, particularly across KLIA and Subang Airport, where aerospace, aviation services, and connectivity continue to evolve in tandem,” he stated. Currently, MAHB’s integrated aerospace ecosystems at KLIA and Subang Airport host more than 30 percent of Malaysia’s aerospace operators, contributing approximately RM25 billion—nearly 40 percent—of the country’s aerospace revenue.
As the sector navigates ongoing challenges, MAHB and its partners remain focused on reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a regional aerospace hub, ensuring that the MRO industry continues to underpin the nation’s aviation growth.
