Airline Offers 10 Boeing 787 Jets for Sale Online

China Southern Airlines Auctions Ten Boeing 787 Dreamliners Online
China Southern Airlines has resumed its initiative to sell ten Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners by listing the aircraft for auction on the Shanghai United Assets and Equity Exchange. Initially announced in November 2024 but subsequently paused without explanation, this renewed effort underscores the airline’s strategic move to optimize its fleet amid evolving market conditions.
Details of the Auction and Aircraft Specifications
The ten Dreamliners, each powered by GE Aerospace GEnx engines and accompanied by two spare engines, are available to both domestic and international buyers. Comprehensive information about the aircraft and engines is accessible through the trading portal, with the listing last updated on August 28 and scheduled to remain open until September 25, 2025. The auction itself will be conducted over one hour via the Hong Kong Stock Exchange’s online bidding platform. The starting bid for the entire package—including all ten aircraft and the spare engines—is set at CNY 3.96 billion (approximately $545 million). Individual aircraft are valued between CNY 359 million and 382 million ($50 million to $53 million).
The aircraft, registered as B-2725, B-2726, B-2733, B-2737, B-2735, B-2787, B-2788, B-2732, B-2736, and B-2727, were delivered between May 2013 and June 2014. With an average age of 12 years, these jets have been integral to China Southern’s operations, particularly in the Xinjiang region, where six of the ten were deployed on routes connecting major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu.
Strategic Fleet Realignment Amid Market Shifts
China Southern’s decision to divest its 787-8 fleet reflects a broader trend among Chinese carriers to phase out older widebody aircraft in favor of more efficient models. The airline retired its Airbus A380s in 2023 and has since slowed acquisitions of widebody jets, prioritizing narrowbody aircraft better suited to the post-pandemic recovery in domestic and regional markets. Once a flagship model for the airline, the Boeing 787-8 has increasingly been eclipsed by the larger and more efficient 787-9, which offers greater seating capacity and lower per-seat operating costs.
This sale occurs against a backdrop of rising global demand for widebody aircraft, particularly in the Middle East and Europe, while China’s international aviation market recovery remains sluggish. The underutilization of widebody jets on domestic routes has prompted carriers like China Southern to reconsider their fleet composition. Currently, only two other Chinese airlines—Hainan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines—operate the 787-8, with fleets of ten and six aircraft respectively.
Market Implications and Industry Outlook
Market reactions to the auction are expected to be varied. Interest may arise from both domestic and international airlines seeking to optimize their fleets, but competition from other carriers and the financial challenges associated with operating or grounding older 787s—as evidenced by cases such as Kenya Airways—could dampen enthusiasm. Furthermore, Boeing’s ongoing production trends for the 787 series, including potential increases in output, may influence the attractiveness and pricing of these secondhand jets.
As China Southern proceeds with the sale, the outcome is poised to impact not only its own fleet strategy but also broader trends within the regional and global widebody aircraft market.
