The Critical Role of Data Accuracy in Airport Operations
As airports around the globe accelerate their digital transformation efforts, data has emerged as a strategic asset vital to operational efficiency, resilience, and the enhancement of passenger experiences. Despite substantial investments in data technologies, many airport organizations continue to face challenges in translating vast volumes of information into actionable insights that drive meaningful improvements. This persistent issue was the central theme of the panel discussion titled “Data is the new jet fuel: how advanced analytics are powering the next-gen airport,” held at the International Airport Summit 2025 in Berlin.
Challenges in Leveraging Data Effectively
The panel was moderated by Gerri Sinclair, Chief Prioritisation, Planning and Performance Optimisation Officer at Vancouver International Airport Authority, and included Josh Parkinson, Principal Data Consultant at Zuhlke, and Samuel Ehrat, Senior Project Leader at Zurich Airport. Together, they explored why, despite widespread enthusiasm about data’s transformative potential, airports often struggle to integrate data effectively into their daily operations.
Sinclair questioned the popular analogy of data as “jet fuel,” noting that while data has long been foundational to aviation—encompassing financial, operational, and flight information—the true transformation lies in the ability to connect disparate data sources and generate timely, context-rich insights that inform decision-making. She emphasized that unreliable or context-deficient data undermines the effectiveness of artificial intelligence and other advanced analytics. Unlike fuel, which is consumed, data’s value increases when it is reused, combined, and governed properly. Sinclair cautioned that viewing data as a consumable resource risks fostering short-term thinking rather than building sustainable capabilities.
Echoing these concerns, Parkinson warned that the industry’s fixation on trendy data analogies—whether oil, fuel, or currency—often leads to technology-driven initiatives that overlook foundational challenges. He observed that the core issues surrounding data trustworthiness and meaning have persisted for centuries, drawing a parallel to the Domesday Book of 1086. Parkinson highlighted that inconsistent definitions and unreliable sources remain enduring obstacles despite technological progress.
Ehrat further underscored the difficulties faced within airport organizations, noting that while dashboards and visualizations are relatively straightforward to produce, the more demanding work involves establishing robust data governance frameworks, clear ownership, and a shared understanding across stakeholders. He acknowledged the challenge of justifying investments in these fundamental areas to senior leadership.
Broader Implications of Data Accuracy
The significance of data accuracy extends well beyond operational efficiency. Recent developments illustrate the wider risks associated with unreliable data or misaligned metrics. For instance, the potential for US retaliation against Dublin Airport’s passenger cap threatens to disrupt transatlantic flights, demonstrating how data issues can have international consequences. Similarly, airlines operating in Brazil’s underdeveloped aviation market face disproportionate legal challenges, often exacerbated by poor data quality. In the retail sector, efforts to leverage artificial intelligence are frequently undermined by unreliable data, serving as a cautionary example for airports pursuing similar technological transformations. Even government systems, such as the eVisa process, have come under scrutiny for data integrity concerns, highlighting the critical role of accurate information in immigration and security.
As airports and their partners continue to pursue ambitious digital agendas, the panelists at the summit concurred that trust, governance, and collaboration must form the foundation of any effective data strategy. Without an unwavering focus on data accuracy and contextual understanding, the promise of next-generation airport operations will remain elusive.
