US-Bangla Airlines to Lease 21 Boeing 737-8 Aircraft

US-Bangla Airlines Announces Landmark Lease of 21 Boeing 737-8 Aircraft
US-Bangla Airlines is poised to execute the largest fleet expansion ever undertaken by a private Bangladeshi carrier, with plans to lease 21 Boeing 737-8 aircraft in 2027. Valued at approximately $1.11 billion, the deal involves sourcing the aircraft from five leading global leasing companies, according to airline spokesperson Kamrul Islam. A formal announcement is scheduled for 29 July at Sheraton Dhaka, where senior representatives from Boeing, the US embassy in Bangladesh, international leasing firms, and key figures from the country’s aviation and tourism sectors are expected to be present.
Strategic Vision and Regional Expansion
In a letter submitted to the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, US-Bangla outlined its ambitious strategy to transform Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet into regional aviation hubs. The airline intends to expand its international services from Chattogram and Sylhet to destinations across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, while simultaneously growing its operations in Dhaka. Kamrul Islam emphasized that this initiative transcends mere business growth, describing the acquisition of new aircraft as a landmark investment in Bangladesh’s aviation industry. Currently, US-Bangla operates a fleet of 25 aircraft, making it the largest airline in Bangladesh by fleet size.
The expansion comes amid intensifying competition and evolving market dynamics in the region. Industry observers note that foreign carriers continue to dominate Bangladesh’s international passenger market, resulting in significant outflows of foreign currency. By increasing the capacity of local airlines such as US-Bangla, the country aims to capture a larger share of international routes, reduce dependence on overseas operators, and retain more foreign exchange within its borders.
Challenges and Industry Context
Despite the promising outlook, the ambitious expansion faces potential challenges. Market analysts have highlighted recent trends, including Avelo Airlines’ indication of declining prices for Boeing 737-800NGs, which could affect leasing costs and market valuations. Furthermore, the competitive landscape is becoming increasingly intense. For instance, Vietnam Airlines recently secured a $2.9 billion loan to finance its own 737 Max 8 orders, underscoring the necessity of strong financial backing for large-scale fleet acquisitions. These developments may compel competitors to revise their leasing or purchasing strategies, potentially influencing airline valuations and investor confidence across the sector.
Aviation expert and former Biman board member Kazi Wahidul Alam described US-Bangla’s initiative as one of the most significant fleet expansions in Bangladesh’s aviation history. He noted that no government or private airline in the country has previously undertaken such a large-scale fleet expansion simultaneously, calling it a remarkable achievement that reflects the airline’s long-term vision.
The expansion is also expected to generate thousands of jobs, necessitating a substantial increase in skilled personnel, including pilots, maintenance engineers, cabin crew, and ground staff. This growth could broaden career opportunities for young Bangladeshis, particularly in pilot training and aircraft maintenance engineering.
Earlier this year, state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed a $3.7 billion agreement with Boeing to purchase 14 aircraft, aiming to expand its fleet to 47 by 2035. This move further signals robust growth and increasing investment in Bangladesh’s aviation sector.
