Airbus Shares Steady on A350F Orders and China Widebody Demand

Airbus Shares Steady Amid Strong A350F Orders and Growing China Demand
Airbus shares have remained near recent highs as investors assess the company’s robust order book for the A350F freighter, increasing widebody aircraft commitments from Chinese carriers, and a premium valuation supported by strong free cash flow. As of late August 2026, Airbus SE (ISIN NL0000235190) stock reflects market confidence in the manufacturer’s expanding commercial aircraft portfolio and its capacity to deliver solid financial returns.
Expanding Order Book and Chinese Market Influence
Industry data through mid-2026 indicates accelerating demand for Airbus widebody aircraft, with Chinese airlines playing a central role in this growth. In June, China Eastern Airlines agreed to acquire 25 A330neo passenger jets, followed by Air China’s July commitment to purchase 15 A350-900s. These transactions reinforce Airbus’s position in the long-haul market across Asia and contribute to a growing backlog of orders.
The A350F freighter program has notably gained traction, with Airbus securing 107 firm commitments by July 2026. Key orders include a 20-aircraft deal from Atlas Air Worldwide and a 10-aircraft agreement with Air China Cargo. Airbus is preparing for the A350F’s maiden flight in Toulouse, scheduled for the third week of September 2026. This milestone is critical to maintaining the delivery timeline, with initial customer handovers targeted by the end of 2027. Some analysts caution that certification processes could extend into 2028, potentially delaying revenue recognition but not detracting from Airbus’s long-term freight strategy.
Beyond the A350F, Airbus continues to experience strong demand across its A320neo family and widebody aircraft. In July alone, the company recorded 204 gross orders, including a significant 100-jet purchase from leasing firm SMBC Aviation Capital. Airbus delivered 67 commercial aircraft in July, bringing year-to-date deliveries to 418 units. To meet its full-year target of approximately 870 aircraft, Airbus will need to sustain a monthly delivery rate closer to 70 units.
Competitive Challenges and Strategic Opportunities
While Airbus benefits from surging demand in China, it faces emerging competition from the state-backed Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The recent international debut of COMAC’s C919 signals Beijing’s ambition to challenge the Boeing-Airbus duopoly. However, the C919 remains heavily reliant on foreign components and lacks certification from major U.S. and European regulators, limiting its immediate global competitiveness.
In addition to commercial aviation, Airbus is exploring further opportunities in the defense sector. Potential additional orders for the A400M airlifter through a NATO allies’ pooled procurement initiative could bolster the company’s market outlook.
Valuation and Financial Performance
Airbus currently trades at a premium relative to several industry peers, underpinned by positive free cash flow. As of late August, Airbus shares are valued at the dollar-equivalent of $236.50, with a market capitalization of $187 billion, a price-to-earnings ratio of 27.3, and free cash flow totaling $5.36 billion. The stock offers a dividend yield of 1.6%.
By comparison, Boeing’s market capitalization stands at $169 billion, but it trades at a significantly higher P/E multiple of 79.3, generates negative EBITDA, and does not pay a dividend. This contrast suggests that investors currently view Airbus as a more stable and profitable investment within the aerospace sector.
Airbus’s steady share price reflects investor confidence in its order momentum, particularly in Asia, while acknowledging the competitive pressures it faces and the importance of sustaining delivery targets through the remainder of the year.
