Airlines with the Largest Boeing 777X Orders
Boeing’s 777X, the next-generation widebody aircraft, continues to garner substantial interest from airlines worldwide despite ongoing delays. Originally slated to enter service in 2020, the program has been postponed to 2026 due to persistent production and certification challenges. Nonetheless, the 777X remains a critical competitor to the Airbus A350, with airlines maintaining significant order commitments that highlight its strategic importance in the long-haul aviation market.
Order Backlog and Major Customers
As of July 2024, Boeing is managing a backlog of approximately 6,000 aircraft awaiting production, with the 777X prominently featured among these orders. Emirates leads the list with 205 firm orders, more than double the 94 held by Qatar Airways, the program’s second-largest customer. Other key buyers include Singapore Airlines with 31 orders, Lufthansa with 27, and Etihad Airways with 25, underscoring the Middle East’s continued investment in renewing its long-haul fleets.
Additional notable commitments come from Cathay Pacific with 21 aircraft, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Korean Air each with 20, International Airlines Group (IAG) through British Airways with 18, Air India and Cargolux each with 10, Ethiopian Airlines with 8, and Silk Way West Airlines with 2. Despite this robust demand, Boeing recently removed 38 orders from its official backlog, reflecting the impact of delays and shifting delivery schedules. Nevertheless, the 777X’s advanced fuel efficiency and enhanced passenger comfort continue to position it as a competitive option in the widebody segment.
Key Airline Commitments and Program Outlook
Lufthansa is poised to become the launch customer for the 777X, with the first of its 27 aircraft expected to enter service in 2026. Boeing has acknowledged ongoing challenges related to certification and interior configuration but remains committed to meeting Lufthansa’s delivery timeline.
Emirates and Etihad Airways stand out as the largest customers globally, highlighting the strategic focus of Middle Eastern carriers on long-haul connectivity. Emirates’ 205-unit order cements its position as the program’s largest customer, while Etihad’s 25 aircraft further demonstrate regional confidence in the aircraft’s future prospects.
Air India has embarked on a significant fleet expansion, signing a deal for 290 Boeing jets that includes 10 777Xs. Finalized at the 2023 Paris Air Show, this agreement also encompasses 190 737 MAXs and 20 787 Dreamliners, with options for additional aircraft, reflecting a broad modernization strategy.
All Nippon Airways initially ordered 40 widebody jets from Boeing in 2014, including 20 777-9s. In 2022, ANA revised its order to 18 777-9s and 2 777-8 freighters, citing the need for greater flexibility and improved fuel efficiency to address both international and domestic market demands.
International Airlines Group, through British Airways, committed to 42 777Xs in 2019—18 firm orders and 24 options—valued at $18.6 billion at list prices. This investment supports IAG’s fleet renewal strategy aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, passenger experience, and advancing sustainability objectives.
Despite ongoing production and certification hurdles, the Boeing 777X program’s strong order book, led by Emirates, Etihad, and other major global carriers, reflects sustained airline confidence in the aircraft. While recent adjustments to the order backlog have occurred, the 777X remains a pivotal contender in the competition with the Airbus A350 as airlines seek to modernize their fleets and meet evolving travel demands.
