Berniq Airways Chooses CFM LEAP-1A Engines for Its First Aircraft

Berniq Airways Selects CFM LEAP-1A Engines for Airbus A320neo Fleet
Berniq Airways has confirmed its first order for CFM LEAP-1A engines to power a new fleet of six Airbus A320neo family aircraft, marking a pivotal development in the Libyan carrier’s expansion plans. The agreement, formalized at a ceremony attended by senior executives from both Berniq Airways and CFM International, encompasses 12 LEAP-1A engines, additional spare units, and a multi-year maintenance and services contract.
Expansion and Fleet Modernization
Founded in 2018 and officially launched in 2021, Berniq Airways is a private airline headquartered in Benghazi. The carrier has rapidly expanded its route network, offering flights to domestic and international destinations. Its current fleet primarily consists of Airbus A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines. The introduction of the A320neo, equipped with the more fuel-efficient LEAP-1A engines, represents a strategic move to modernize the fleet and enhance operational efficiency. Berniq Airways described the announcement as a significant milestone in its ongoing growth and innovation efforts.
Industry Challenges and Regional Competition
Berniq’s selection of the LEAP-1A engine comes amid notable challenges within the aerospace supply chain. CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, has recently encountered supply chain disruptions and industrial action at its Villaroche assembly plant in France. These issues have prompted ongoing discussions with Airbus, raising concerns about potential delays in engine deliveries.
The competitive landscape in the region is also intensifying. Buraq Air, another Libyan carrier, has announced plans to modernize its fleet with Airbus A320neo aircraft. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Air has placed a substantial order for 120 LEAP-1A engines to power its future A321neo fleet. These developments underscore strong regional demand for next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft and engines.
Market Outlook and Demand for LEAP Engines
Market analysts highlight that demand for CFM LEAP engines remains robust despite supply challenges. GE Aerospace recently revised its forecast upward, anticipating a more than 20% year-on-year increase in LEAP engine deliveries in 2025. While this surge in demand may exacerbate supply chain pressures, it also reflects the industry’s confidence in the LEAP-1A’s performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability.
As Berniq Airways prepares to integrate the A320neo into its operations, the airline is positioning itself to compete effectively in a rapidly modernizing aviation market, even as broader challenges persist for engine manufacturers and aircraft suppliers.
