Cathay Pacific Confirms Order for Boeing 777X Aircraft
Commitment to Fleet Renewal Amid Certification Delays
Cathay Pacific has officially confirmed an order for 35 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, reinforcing its long-haul fleet renewal strategy. The Hong Kong-based airline plans to begin receiving the next-generation widebody jets in 2027, with nine deliveries scheduled for that year and the remaining 26 expected from 2028 onward. This order is intended to gradually replace the airline’s aging Boeing 777-300ER fleet, maintaining the current fleet size while introducing advanced aircraft to support expanded long-haul operations from Hong Kong International Airport.
Despite ongoing certification delays for the 777X program, Cathay Pacific remains confident in Boeing’s progress. Alex McGowan, Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer, emphasized the airline’s close communication with Boeing, noting regular updates on the certification process. Originally slated for service entry in 2020, the 777-9’s timeline has been pushed back, with Boeing now targeting early 2027 for the first delivery to launch customer Lufthansa. Other early operators include Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar Airways.
In addition to the 777X order, Cathay Pacific is preparing to take delivery of eight new Airbus narrowbody aircraft, reflecting a comprehensive approach to modernizing both its long-haul and regional fleets. Industry analysts have highlighted the significance of Cathay’s large 777X order, suggesting it may prompt competitive responses from rival carriers. Boeing’s ongoing negotiations for further large orders, particularly for the 777X, remain a focal point at major industry summits, with potential implications for the global aviation market.
Innovations in Premium Cabin Experience
A central feature of Cathay Pacific’s 777-9 introduction will be the launch of new first class suites. These fully enclosed private suites will replace the airline’s existing open-suite first class product, which has been in service since 2007. Guillaume Vivet, General Manager of Customer Experience Design, confirmed that the new flagship suites will be complemented by a redesigned service experience, including enhanced onboard dining and personalized cabin service, elevating the premium travel experience.
While awaiting the arrival of the 777-9, Cathay Pacific is undertaking a significant retrofit of its current 777-300ER fleet. This upgrade involves the introduction of the Aria Suite business class cabin and the removal of first class to expand the business class section. This interim enhancement ensures that passengers will benefit from upgraded premium products prior to the deployment of the new aircraft.
Cathay Pacific’s dual focus on fleet renewal and premium cabin innovation positions the airline to maintain a competitive edge in the evolving global aviation landscape, even as certification and delivery schedules remain subject to regulatory developments.
