Dubai Airshow 2025: AI and Technology Transforming Air Mobility
The Dubai Airshow 2025 underscored the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies in shaping the future of aviation. Across airlines and airports, AI has become integral to forecasting traffic patterns, identifying potential conflicts, and supporting operational decision-making. These capabilities are enhancing safety and efficiency within increasingly complex airspace environments.
Advancing Air Mobility Through Unified Data and AI
Omar Binadai, Chief Technology and Infrastructure Officer at Dubai Airports, highlighted the importance of unifying data platforms to streamline information management and insight generation. He emphasized that AI-driven predictive tools are essential as the airport prepares to accommodate emerging forms of air mobility, including urban air taxis and autonomous systems. This vision aligns with the broader industry push toward integrating new technologies despite ongoing challenges.
The regulatory landscape for advanced air mobility (AAM) remains in development, even as competition intensifies among innovators such as Joby and Vertical Aerospace. Joby is advancing plans for local service launches, while Vertical Aerospace recently revealed its certification design. These developments, alongside successful flight demonstrations and strategic partnerships, are driving investment and interest in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Nevertheless, questions persist regarding market readiness and the speed at which these technologies can be assimilated into existing infrastructure.
The Human Element in a Digital Transformation
Marc Philippe Lumpe, Chief Operations Officer at Air Transat, stressed that adopting AI necessitates a comprehensive digital transformation. He advised focusing on initiatives that deliver tangible value by covering end-to-end processes before transitioning them to AI systems. Despite rapid technological progress, industry leaders consistently emphasized the indispensable role of human expertise.
Ibraheem Sheerah, Chief Transformation Officer at Saudia, remarked that while AI offers significant capabilities, the human touch remains crucial, particularly in enhancing customer experience. He noted that the aviation sector’s priorities revolve around speed, efficiency, and ensuring passengers perceive seamless service.
Christiaan Hen, CEO of Assaia, described AI as a decision-support tool that learns from human behavior to drive continuous improvement. He identified the shortage of skilled talent as a major challenge in managing these innovations. Hen also pointed to the accelerating impact of mobile connectivity and the internet, which are enabling airlines and airports to innovate at an unprecedented pace through ongoing investments.
Operational Efficiency and the Path Forward
Technological advancements are also delivering concrete improvements in operational efficiency. Hamdi Osman, Founder and CEO of SolitAir Holding, highlighted how processes such as aircraft offloading have been significantly expedited through technology, reducing what once took an hour to a fraction of that time. This optimization exemplifies the tangible benefits of integrating AI and automation into daily operations.
Panel discussions at the airshow converged on the view that the future of aviation will be defined by the seamless integration of AI, automation, and human expertise. Digitization is regarded as a prerequisite for widespread AI adoption, with predictive analytics and unified data platforms expected to become central to airport and airline operations. As Dubai positions itself as a global hub for next-generation air mobility, the ability to navigate regulatory challenges, cultivate strategic partnerships, and leverage real-time data will be critical. Experts concluded that organizations embracing these changes today will shape the future landscape of air travel.
