Eno Oversees Pre-Delivery Inspection of Ibom Air’s Third Airbus A220-300
Strategic Visit to Airbus Facility in Canada
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno recently led a delegation comprising state officials and Ibom Air management to the Airbus production facility in Mirabel, Canada, to conduct a pre-delivery inspection of the airline’s third Airbus A220-300. This formal review, conducted prior to the aircraft’s handover, represents a key milestone in Ibom Air’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its fleet. The delegation was welcomed by Guillaume Chevasson, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Canada, as part of the acceptance process necessary before the aircraft enters commercial service.
Aniekan Essienette, Group Manager of Marketing and Communication at Ibom Air, confirmed that this aircraft is the second A220 delivered under the airline’s firm order of 10 Airbus A220s placed in 2021. The addition is expected to enhance Ibom Air’s capacity and improve connectivity across Africa, reinforcing the airline’s growth strategy.
Commitment to Aviation Development and Economic Growth
Governor Eno emphasized that the inspection reflects Akwa Ibom’s commitment to positioning Ibom Air as a strategic asset for the state. He highlighted that the investment aligns with the state’s ARISE Agenda, which aims to establish Akwa Ibom as a leading aviation hub supported by world-class infrastructure and a modern airline. Eno expressed optimism that the new aircraft would stimulate economic opportunities in trade, tourism, investment, and regional development.
Ibom Air CEO George Uriesi underscored the significance of the pre-delivery inspection within the broader context of the airline’s fleet expansion program. He noted that as demand for air travel increases across their markets, the airline remains focused on acquiring modern aircraft that offer operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and enhanced passenger comfort. Uriesi reaffirmed confidence in the Airbus A220 as the optimal aircraft to support the airline’s network strategy.
Guillaume Chevasson of Airbus Canada welcomed the ongoing partnership with Ibom Air, highlighting the A220’s operational flexibility, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort as key advantages for both domestic and regional routes.
Industry Context and Market Dynamics
The inspection takes place amid heightened scrutiny of Airbus’s production capabilities. Potential challenges such as production delays or quality control issues at the Mirabel facility could affect Ibom Air’s operational timelines and broader fleet plans. Market analysts have noted that any instability in Airbus’s output may invite increased oversight and could temporarily influence the company’s stock performance.
Meanwhile, competitors like Boeing are closely monitoring these developments. With the Boeing MAX 7 approaching certification and securing new contracts, any setbacks for Airbus could create opportunities for rivals to capitalize on shifting market dynamics and regain market share.
Despite these pressures, Ibom Air’s latest acquisition signals sustained confidence in Airbus and a firm commitment to delivering modern, efficient air travel options within Nigeria and the wider region. The airline anticipates the formal delivery of the aircraft in Akwa Ibom State and its integration into the expanding network.
