GE Aerospace and Waygate Technologies Introduce Automated Engine Inspection System

GE Aerospace and Waygate Technologies Unveil Automated Engine Inspection System
GE Aerospace and Waygate Technologies have jointly introduced an advanced automated solution designed to enhance borescope inspections of GEnx-1B and -2B engines. This new system aims to standardize and streamline the inspection process by integrating Menu Directed Inspection (MDI) templates into Waygate Technologies’ Mentor Visual iQ+ video borescope. The collaboration leverages guided workflows, artificial intelligence assistance, and consistent high-quality imaging to improve inspection accuracy and efficiency.
Enhancing Inspection Precision and Consistency
Developed under a Joint Technology Development Agreement (JTDA), the MDI templates assist inspectors in capturing the recommended views of High-Pressure Turbine (HPT) S1 and S2 blades, in strict accordance with aircraft maintenance manual requirements. By embedding representative images and overlays directly onto the borescope’s display, the system minimizes operator variability and ensures uniformity across inspections. The inclusion of integrated measurement tools—such as line, area, and depth profile capabilities—further supports precise and reliable assessments.
The automation extends to image and video data labeling, which enhances traceability and facilitates improved data connectivity and workflow management. Inspectors can utilize the InspectionWorks Insight cloud platform to share inspection data seamlessly, thereby optimizing fleet management. This standardized protocol is also expected to simplify training for new technicians, addressing labor market challenges by making the inspection process more accessible and efficient.
Industry Impact and Future Challenges
Michael Domke, General Manager Visual at Waygate Technologies, emphasized the significance of the development, stating, “We are excited to see the MDI Templates now available to our customers, providing a standardized approach to inspections and advancing the next phase of automation in engine maintenance.” Nicole Jenkins, Chief MRO Engineer at GE Aerospace, highlighted the collaborative effort, noting, “Together with Waygate Technologies, we’re further integrating automation and AI to help our operators drive more standardization, consistency, and efficiency with video borescope inspections for critical engine parts.”
Despite the promising benefits, the integration of advanced automation and AI into existing manufacturing and maintenance processes presents notable challenges. Ensuring alignment with stringent aviation safety standards remains paramount, while the substantial costs associated with developing and maintaining such sophisticated systems pose financial considerations.
Market reception to the new system has been largely positive. GE Aerospace’s continued investment in U.S. manufacturing and digital infrastructure is anticipated to enhance production efficiency and reliability, potentially bolstering investor confidence. Furthermore, this initiative may prompt competitors to accelerate their own research and development efforts in automated inspection technologies, intensifying competition within the aerospace engine sector.
The GEnx Menu Directed Inspection Templates are now accessible to customers through the GE Aerospace Customer Technical Education Center, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of engine maintenance. As Jenkins remarked, “These technologies are empowering our MRO workforce to work more productively, while raising the bar even higher on safety and quality.”
