Honeywell and ITP Aero Launch F124 Engine MRO Hub in Madrid

Honeywell and ITP Aero Establish Europe’s First F124 Engine MRO Hub in Madrid
Honeywell and ITP Aero have officially opened Europe’s first dedicated maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) centre for the Honeywell F124-GA-200 engine, marking a significant advancement for the region’s aerospace industry. Situated at ITP Aero’s facility in Ajalvir, Madrid, the new centre was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by senior executives from both organisations, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration.
Enhancing Engine Support and Operational Efficiency
The Madrid hub is poised to revolutionise engine support for European operators by localising MRO services that were previously accessible only outside Europe. This localisation is expected to substantially reduce turnaround times, lower operational costs, and increase flexibility for the more than 150 F124 engines currently in service across the continent. John Head, Vice President and General Manager of Engines at Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, emphasised that the new centre strengthens the company’s commitment to improving engine readiness and operational flexibility for European customers. By bringing MRO capabilities closer to operators, Honeywell aims to alleviate logistical challenges and enhance service efficiency.
The establishment of the centre follows ITP Aero’s acquisition of the F124 licence in 2024, which enabled both companies to collaborate on developing the necessary infrastructure and regional expertise. For ITP Aero, becoming the first authorised European service centre for the F124 engine represents a strategic milestone. Alan Jones, Executive Vice President of MRO at ITP Aero, highlighted that this achievement builds on the company’s longstanding partnership with Honeywell and reinforces Spain’s role in supporting NATO-aligned defence capabilities.
Strategic Implications and Industry Challenges
While the new facility bolsters Europe’s aerospace ecosystem and expands Spain’s industrial presence, Honeywell and ITP Aero must navigate ongoing challenges. Industry observers, including Aviation Week Network, have noted that global supply chain disruptions continue to affect component maintenance, which could impact the efficiency of MRO operations. Furthermore, the launch of the Madrid hub coincides with strong growth momentum in Honeywell’s Aerospace Technologies segment, intensifying competition from established MRO providers in Europe. These competitors are expected to leverage their existing market positions and technological expertise to maintain or expand their share in the region’s engine aftermarket.
Despite these hurdles, the partnership between Honeywell and ITP Aero highlights the critical role of international collaboration in providing dependable support for military and training aircraft powered by the F124 engine. The Madrid facility is set to become a key asset in sustaining European defence and training fleets, reflecting the evolving dynamics of aerospace maintenance and repair on the continent.
