IAI Finishes Primary Structural Work on Airbus A330-300 P2F Conversion

IAI Completes Primary Structural Work on Airbus A330-300 P2F Conversion
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has announced the successful completion of the primary structural phase in its Airbus A330-300 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion program. This milestone marks the aircraft’s removal from jacks and signals its progression into the critical ground and flight testing stages. The first flight of the converted A330-300 is anticipated within the coming weeks, with certification expected by the end of the year.
Advancing Capabilities Amid Industry Challenges
IAI stands among a select group of aerospace companies worldwide capable of performing advanced conversions on both Boeing and Airbus widebody platforms. This expertise positions the company to meet the growing global demand for freighter aircraft, as airlines, leasing firms, and cargo operators increasingly seek flexible and cost-effective solutions to expand their air cargo capacity.
Nevertheless, IAI’s progress unfolds against a backdrop of persistent industry-wide challenges. The aerospace sector continues to grapple with supply chain disruptions that have delayed deliveries for manufacturers such as Bombardier and affected key suppliers including Honeywell Aerospace Technologies and Gulfstream’s business jet division. These ongoing issues pose potential risks to IAI’s timeline as it advances toward the completion and certification of the A330-300 P2F conversion.
Market competition is also intensifying. Airbus is actively developing its own freighter conversion programs, notably the A350F, while competitors like ST Engineering report robust aftermarket growth and have secured contracts for similar conversion projects. Innovations in cargo door integration and efforts to broaden customer bases—potentially doubling them over the long term—are reshaping the competitive landscape. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and fluctuating demand patterns add further complexity to the market environment for IAI and its peers.
Strategic Vision and Market Positioning
Despite these headwinds, IAI continues to expand its global network of conversion facilities, underscoring its commitment to the air cargo sector. Boaz Levy, President and CEO of IAI, emphasized the significance of this achievement within the company’s broader strategic framework: “This achievement marks another step in executing IAI’s long-term vision to expand its role in the global air cargo market. By continuously advancing our technological and industrial capabilities, we are positioned to deliver scalable and reliable solutions that align with our customers’ evolving operational needs, while reinforcing our leadership in the conversion arena.”
Yaacov Berkovitz, Executive Vice President and General Manager of IAI’s Aviation Group, highlighted the strategic value of the milestone, noting, “This milestone reflects IAI’s ability to transform decades of experience and advanced engineering expertise into long-term value for our customers. Our A330-300 passenger-to-freighter conversion has been purpose-built to meet evolving market demand, delivering a highly competitive value proposition and strong market appeal. As one of the few companies worldwide with the capability to execute comprehensive and highly complex conversions across both narrowbody and widebody aircraft, IAI offers customers greater fleet flexibility, long-term confidence and resilient investment value across market cycles.”
As IAI advances through testing and certification, the company remains focused on managing supply chain uncertainties and competitive pressures, aiming to solidify its leadership position in the rapidly evolving air cargo conversion market.
