Industries with $100K+ Jobs Face Worker Shortages as Many Near Retirement

Industries with $100K+ Jobs Confront Worker Shortages Amid Approaching Retirements
Certain high-paying industries, particularly those offering six-figure salaries, continue to depend heavily on human expertise, judgment, and interpersonal skills—qualities that remain difficult to automate. However, these sectors are now facing significant labor shortages as a large cohort of experienced professionals approaches retirement age. This demographic shift is creating a generational imbalance that technology alone cannot address.
Aviation: A Sector Struggling to Replace Retiring Experts
The aviation industry is confronting a critical shortage of skilled workers, most notably among aircraft maintenance technicians. Data from Oliver Wyman and the Aviation Technician Education Council reveal that over 40% of the current maintenance workforce is aged 60 or older. As baby boomers exit the profession, the influx of new talent has been insufficient to fill the resulting vacancies. This scarcity has driven entry-level technician salaries up by approximately 50% since 2020, according to staffing firm Aerotex.
Crystal Maguire, executive director of the Aviation Technician Education Council, emphasizes the potential for these roles to lead to six-figure careers. Beyond maintenance technicians, several aviation positions command competitive salaries, including commercial pilots earning around $198,100, flight test engineers at approximately $134,885, and air traffic controllers with salaries near $144,580.
While artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into flight operations, maintenance diagnostics, and route planning, the most critical aviation roles still demand human intervention. Tasks such as responding to sudden weather changes during flights, managing congested airspace, and identifying safety concerns during inspections require precision and accountability that remain challenging to automate.
Healthcare: High Demand for Skilled Professionals Despite AI Advances
The healthcare sector similarly faces a growing demand for highly trained professionals in six-figure roles. Although AI technologies are being adopted to streamline administrative duties, manage patient records, and assist in diagnostics, the highest-paying positions—such as physicians and medical specialists—continue to rely on extensive training and complex human judgment.
Contrary to concerns that AI might replace certain medical roles, including radiologists, the demand for these professionals is increasing. Experts now advocate for a collaborative model where physicians and AI work in tandem, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient care, thereby underscoring the indispensable role of skilled human practitioners.
The Broader Labor Market Challenge
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports significant labor force declines in sectors like construction and healthcare, where AI offers limited mitigation. This demographic trend, driven by the accelerated retirement of baby boomers relative to the entry of younger workers, has been described by Indeed’s chief economist as a “great mismatch.” The consequences include job reallocations, increased market friction, and rising wages for critical positions.
Further complicating the issue is the prevalence of ageism in hiring practices, which often results in the premature dismissal of experienced employees. This not only intensifies workforce shortages but also imposes financial costs on companies and shareholders by forfeiting valuable expertise.
As industries with six-figure salary roles grapple with an aging workforce and insufficient new talent, maintaining a skilled labor pool emerges as a pressing challenge—one that neither automation nor short-term recruitment efforts can readily resolve.
